Discovering Natural Virtues / Qualities

Meditation enables us to achieve self-awareness and self-realization (a true sense of who we really are), and discover our basic qualities or specialties, which lay hidden within each of us.

1. Use a flower as a basis for meditation. You should be completely focused on the flower, and no other thoughts should enter your mind.
3. How might the qualities of the flower reflect aspects of your self?
4. Now consider each different characteristic you have given the flower. Think about each of it in terms of how it might correspond to your personality.
5. If the flower has any negative aspects (is one of the petals drying out?), what might this be telling you about yourself? Concentrate on repairing the negative, making your self-image wholly positive.
6. Connect with the flower in this way, until you feel that the beauties you see are a direct reflection of your virtues.

In the above exercise, the form of the flower's many petals may be seen to correspond to your qualities; the fragrance may correspond to the quality of your thoughts; and the colour may refer to some of your positive moods or emotions (green for your love of the world, red for calm assertion (positive aggression), blue for sympathy). What you see, in the moment of meditation, is what you are.

Message for the day 29.01.2010

To forget the mistakes of the past is to win the game.

Expression:

To forget the mistakes of the past means to take the learning from them and then forget them. When there is the ability to do this, there is also the ability to make the best use of the resources available in the present. There is a clear vision for the future and constant effort to move towards it.

Experience:

When I am able to forgive my own mistakes after understanding how to correct them, I am able to forget them. This keeps me mentally free and I am able to move forward with lightness. Whatever situations come my way, I am able to enjoy them like a game.

Determination makes you sit up straight and love everything, because it's all part of moving forward. Day and night you have the feeling that you only have to seek and can touch the hard core of wisdom that rests inside each moment. To the extent possible, he works towards bettering the situation.

Thought for Today

To be free from worry means to have the power to change negative into positive.

The ones who are free from worry change that which is bad into something good, because the state of mind is calm. The one with a calm state of mind is able to think creatively and see very clearly even beyond the situation. So there is the ability to transform the seemingly negative situation into something very positive. So there is clear decision-making and quick action. There is also no time wasted. When we are free from worry, we constantly remain satisfied for having seen the positive and finding the solutions immediately instead of looking at the problem and worrying over it. This internal silence gives the feeling of power, which naturally enables transformation in a second and only the goodness is absorbed.

Thought for Today

Bringing newness in dealing with life's situations brings happiness.

When there is the desire to find new ways of responding to life's challenges, unhappiness ends which in turn helps to fulfill one's highest potential. All it needs is the determination to adopt a fresh awareness. Thus burdensome thoughts that drain out positive energy are set aside. The quality of life itself becomes better. We experience a lot of happiness when there is newness brought in responding to situations. The potential and the energy of the mind is channelised in a positive way so there is an experience of fulfillment and satisfaction. The mind is not caught up with negative or waste but is busy trying for the best solutions in all situations.

Visualization (cont.)

To find such a symbol for yourself, which represents your principles and aims, practice the following visualization:

Experience yourself as a soul, a sparkling point of light concentrated in the centre of your forehead…
Visualize this peaceful point radiating rays of tranquility, peace and light…
In this stage of soul consciousness, project on the screen of your mind images of your life in the future...
Picture yourself fulfilling your life's aims and objectives...
You are surrounded by people involved in that...

See yourself being challenged now… the biggest challenge ever…
coming in front of you… the challenge you have always been defeated by before...
Observe yourself becoming fully victorious...

See and feel yourself acting very decisively (positively) with no hesitation and according to your principles...
Feel those principles rise powerfully to your heart and to your forehead...
In this situation, how do you see and hear your interactions with others…?
What thoughts and feelings are being experienced and exchanged…?
What words are you using…?
What is the expression on your face…?
What is the outcome (result)…?
Now create a symbol representing the above scene...
Focus on it until it becomes clear in your mind...
Stay there... your aim is to stay with this picture as long as you are able... hold on to it.
Now bring your attention back to the present moment and surroundings.

You could create such a symbol for yourself depending on your role in day-to-day life e.g. for a businessman, this symbol could be a flock (group) of white eagles, where the eagle symbolizes the principles (values) of fearlessness and independence. The colour white represents the change of objective from hunter to protector. That the eagle is flying in a flock symbolizes the principle of 'interdependence' (eagles don't normally fly in flocks)...retaining your individuality but working together with others.

True honesty to the self brings the power to bring about change.

Expression:

To be honest is not just to be truthful. It is more to be honest with the self. The one who is honest with the self constantly has the aim of bringing about a change for the better. Each situation is used as a chance for the betterment of the self. So there is always the aim not to repeat the mistakes that are committed once.

Experience:

When I am honest with myself I am able to feel the constant progress and experience the happiness of moving forward under all circumstances. I have the power to understand the situation, not just from my point of view, but more in a detached way. So I am able to understand and accept whatever the situation holds for me and learn from it humbly.

Visualization

The practice of visualization in Rajyoga meditation enables us to define our principles and aims and objectives into a single meaningful ‘symbol’ that we can flash into our mind often throughout the day, which helps us in remaining relaxed and focused amidst situations and scenes in which we tend to lose our peace. Imagine you are about to go into a meeting with your organization head in which you know you are going to be subjected to emotional pressure to do something you may not want to do. Before entering the room, stop for a moment and flash up on the screen of your mind the image of your 'symbol'. This will immediately make you recall what is important to you. Even though you may be faced with facts and logical arguments, if you keep focused on this ‘symbol’ you will remain relaxed and stable.

Tomorrow we shall explain a simple meditation commentary to find a symbol for yourself, which represents your principles and aims.

The one who has the courage to face is the one who can bring about a change.

Expression:

When there is a challenge which brings out a negative response, there is an immediate desire to move away from the situation so that the negativity finishes. But the real challenge is not the situation itself, but the expression of a weakness within. The one who has the courage to face this weakness and work on it is able to bring about a change accordingly.

Experience :

When I am able to face the challenge of working on my own weaknesses, instead of moving away from the situation I am able to experience progress at every step. Then there will be no feeling of helplessness but I will be able to have full control on the situation. So there is the ability to learn from each situation and move forward constantly.

To end waste means to be free from defeat.

The one with faith in the intellect always remains at a distance from waste, whether it is waste thoughts, waste words or waste actions. To move away from waste means to be victorious. The one who is free from waste is busy with the positive and useful. Such a person is constantly searching for solutions and trying to make the best out of the situation. It is because of waste that we sometimes experience defeat and sometimes victory. If we are able to finish waste, we are able to finish defeat. Because whatever the situation may be, however challenging it may be, if we are able to finish waste we are able to recognise the benefit that is merged within it and so are able to experience being constantly victorious.

Anger Management And Prevention

Step One – Never struggle with your anger. Don't fight it, or resist it, in any way. That only either strengthens it, or suppresses it until it emerges another day. So face it and accept its presence.

Step Two – As soon as possible, simply observe it. In the act of observation all emotion must die. Why? Because you are standing back from it within your consciousness in order to observe it. And as you stand back within your consciousness you are withdrawing (removing) your life giving energy from it.

Step Three – Through the practice of meditation, return to your centre, that means the centre of your consciousness, the centre of your self. At the centre you will find inner peace, and that peace is your power. At the centre of yourself you will find your love, and that love, when you give it to yourself and others, is the healing balm of forgiveness. Kindly note that the two reflections given below are connected with each other. Please put them one after the other, in the right order

Self Empowerment

To fill your self with a quality or power, which you feel you do not have or one, which is lacking inside you, try the following exercise. Suppose you feel that you lack contentment (satisfaction). To increase this quality inside you, sit comfortably in a pleasant room with your eyes open.

Withdraw (remove) energy mentally from everything around you – turn your attention inward. You might think of how a tortoise withdraws into its shell to detach itself from the outside world, but carrying the experience of the world with it inside its shelter.

Create a point of consciousness. Focus on the centre of your forehead. Think of this point as a bright star, a sparkling jewel, a flame or a being of light. This will radiate positive energy, making you feel good about yourself.

Affirm (strengthen) this positive energy through positive thoughts and images about yourself such as ”I am a contented soul, I shower everyone whom I meet with the quality of contentment”, “I am a jewel of contentment”, or “I am the child of the Supreme Soul, the Ocean of Contentment”.

Focus your energy on contentment, and let this become the object of your meditation. As you focus, you will give contentment life, turning a thought into a feeling.

Experience this feeling by giving your conscious attention to it.

During the entire day, you could visualize yourself performing each action in the canopy (shelter) of the Ocean of Contentment. Now perform this exercise for different virtues like cheerfulness, courage, humility (egolessness), tolerance, forgiveness, determination, etc. especially for the ones you think are lacking inside you. For the qualities already existing inside you, you could use this exercise to strengthen those features of your personality and bring them more into your actions and interactions.

Projection

Thinking of benefit for the self increases to such an extent that it sometimes takes on the form of selfishness. When we are selfish we stop thinking about others or the effect that our action is going to have on them. Then we are not able to move forward with lightness because the good wishes and blessings of others are not with us.

Solution

In each and every action of ours we need to first check if it is going to be beneficial for us as well as for others. As much as there is benefit for others too in the task that we are doing, that much the good wishes of others will be there for the task. With these good wishes we will be able to move forward much faster and achieving success will be easy.

When we see someone who is in need or who is totally negative, a case that is totally hopeless, there are a lot of feelings aroused within us. What we feel is pity or hatred, which are only negative feelings. Such negative thoughts don't help in anyway and the people remains as they are, unable to take any benefit from us.

Solution:

Instead of having pity or hatred we need to develop true mercy for others. To have mercy means to have good wishes with love - combined with hope for them. It is our hope that enables them to develop faith in themselves too. This is the method to bring progress even in the most hopeless case.

Thought for Today

To sow the seeds of pure feelings constantly is to experience positive fruit.

When one's feelings are constantly positive and pure, there is no expectation of the fruit to emerge immediately. Even if others are not able to respond to the positivity or if situations are not according to my expectations, there is still the feeling of giving. So there is this positivity expressed through the vibrations spread around and in every word and action. The more we are able to have pure feelings for those around us, the more is the positivity that emerges from within. Because of having discovered the positivity within, we are able to give unconditionally. So we experience the immediate fruit of what we have given and also accumulate for the future, and continue to enjoy multifold fruit of what we give.

Pure feelings reach out and bring benefit to others.

Projection:

When there is someone who is being negative, we tend to think or speak about the negativity we perceive at that time. To think about negativity is to imbibe a little of that negativity within our mind. Then our mind is no more pure and so whatever thoughts we have for that person don't have any positive influence and there is no benefit for them.

Solution:

If we see someone using some weakness, we need to pay special attention not to think or speak about it. Instead we need to concentrate on some speciality of the other person. This gives them the encouragement to use it. The more we see negative, the more negative they will be with us and the more we see positive the more positive they'll be with us.

Thought for Today

Being enlightened means being self aware. Awareness of yourself means you don't miss anything inside. You are aware of things like the quality of your thoughts and feelings, of how you sometimes give your power to others, and how your self-esteem occasionally fluctuates. You don't miss anything because you know that knowing yourself is vital to being comfortable with yourself. Are you comfortable with yourself? No! Then be with your self, talk to your self, listen to your self today. Take a few moments out and have a meeting with yourself. Put yourself in your diary. Put your self at the top of your to list. And write next to it, 'being with myself'. Miss nothing in your self. -relax7.com

To have the ability to listen is to learn

Expression:

When there is the ability to listen there is the ability to understand others and what they are saying. So the one who listens is able to learn from every situation and each and every person whom he comes across. So what he does and what he speaks is much more effective.

Experience:

When I understand that I am a student for my entire life, I am able to be open to learning. So I am able to listen whole-heartedly. Then, instead of only putting across what I have to say, I am able to pay attention to what others are saying too. I am thus able to enrich myself with new treasures constantly.

Thought for Today

To be a giver means to give according to need.

The one who is a giver would be sensitive to the needs of others and will be able to give what the other person needs at the right time, instead of giving what he wants to give. Also such a person is able to give without expecting anything in return. When there is even a little thought to share with others whatever we have, we would naturally be able to perceive our own inner treasures and experience being full. Sharing with others, whatever we can, enables us to get their good wishes also. We thus find ourselves experiencing the richness of life.

Our words are effective only when we combine them with pure thoughts and inspirational actions.

Projection:

As soon as we find someone's mistake it is natural for us to give correction through our words. We tend to explain to others using a lot of words. Yet we find that inspite of saying the right thing we are not being listened to and our words are just wasted away. We don't understand at such times where the problem lies.

Solution:

To enable our corrections to others to be effective, we have to combine our thoughts, words and actions. There need to be good wishes in our thoughts which also brings sweetness in our words. We also need to take care that we are putting into action all that we are talking. When we do this we will find that our words are really effective.

Thought for Today

Where there is contentment, problems finish.

Contentment enables one to have a positive outlook towards life. So the one who is content always works towards solutions, as he is never disturbed with situations, but is always relaxed. This automatically brings the ability to contribute to others and give them the support to bring progress within them. Such a person works for his own self- progress too. When we are content with everything that is happening, we are able to be light in all situations. So even in the biggest difficulty, we are never caught up with the problem, but are always thinking of the solution. Our mind is busy with finding the solution, so internally we remain unaffected with the problem.

Thought for Today

"Help Yourself"

Unfortunately these two words tend to describe the generally selfish and materialistic culture in which most of us live. They result not in self-help but in dependency. Our education and our role models do not encourage us to help ourselves to grow, change and expand our capacities as human beings. Real self-help means recognising that no one else is responsible for our thoughts and feelings, and that we are only ever victims because we choose to be. Our destiny is always and only in our own hands - despite all apparent evidence which may indicate otherwise. Learning to help ourselves is also a prerequisite to extending a hand of assistance to others. We all need a leg up from time to time, but once there, we are always on our own. -relax7.com

Determination enables us to overcome our weaknesses.

Projection:

When we recognize any weakness of ours, we want to make effort to remove it. But usually we work on it for a few days with great attention. After some time, we find ourselves losing interest and the weakness gets stronger taking hold of us once again. We find ourselves exactly where we had started having no further enthusiasm to work on ourselves.

Solution:

In order to overcome any weakness of ours, we need to have a strong aim in our mind to remove it. With this comes the determination to work on it without losing hope. Even if we find ourselves becoming slack, we need to remind ourselves that we don't want that particular weakness in our life. Then we will be able to work at
removing the weakness fully.
