Message for the day 29-04-2011

Respect from others is attained when there is a connection with the divinity within.

Projection:

Every human being has innate worth which is pure and divine. Faith in the self brings out the potential within and this brings respect for the self. Self-respect makes us self-reliant and makes others respect us too.

Solution:

In order to get respect from others, I need to connect to my own inner divine qualities, which increase my own self-respect. For this let me find something unique in myself and each morning let me remind myself of this speciality. Also I need to make sure I work at least once with this speciality throughout the day.

The Location And The Form Of The Soul (cont.)

All of the characteristics present in the soul are subtle or non-dimensional (without size) in nature - thoughts, feelings, emotions, decision-making power, personality traits (‘sanskars’) and so on. If they are all without size, then it is reasonable to conclude that the living, conscious energy, the soul, from which they emerge is also sizeless. For this simple reason it is eternal (beyond life and death). Something which has no physical size cannot be destroyed. As a soul I am neither spread throughout the whole body nor am I an invisible duplicate of the physical body. Even though the body of subtle energy exists inside the physical body, it is the effect of the soul being in the physical form and not the soul itself. Just as the sun is in one place and yet its light radiates throughout the solar system, the soul is in one place and its energy is spread throughout the whole body. To express something that exists but has no physical dimensions we can use the word point. The soul therefore, is an extremely small point of conscient (living) light. For the sake of having an image to fix our minds on we can say its star like in appearance. In deep meditation we can experience the soul as an extremely small point of non-physical light surrounded by an oval-shaped aura.

Thought for Today

Thoughts are like ants. When one comes, a whole troop arrives. One thought can multiply in a matter of seconds, and then suddenly an army of negative thoughts is on the march. What are you going to do, to stop the invasion? Have one determined thought to transform a negative thought into a positive one. It's easier to win when you deal with only 1 or 2 thoughts. Don't let the negative thoughts multiply - have zero tolerance for their presence, even if it's just for a few minutes.

Others experience sweetness when words are filled with the power of truth.

Projection:

False sweetness is saying that something is good without having taken the pains to find out what it is, i.e. commenting on something superficial. Sweet words are those that are spoken after having understood the reality and so are filled with the power of truth.

Solution:

In order for my words to make an impact on others, I must take time to see if I have really recognised the goodness in the other person. My each comment should be filled with power based on the truth that I have discovered in others and I will find others taking benefit from my words.

The Location And The Form Of The Soul (cont.)

Whenever I say: I feel something within me, pointing to the heart, obviously it's not something within the chest. The physical heart is just an incredibly sophisticated pump for blood. It can even be transplanted – it does not create feelings! Within the real me, the living and thinking being, the soul (situated inside the brain), there is a centre of emotions, moods and feelings. The sensations that I very obviously feel around the body are due to the total connection that exists between the soul and the body in which it resides. For example, when I am afraid of, say, a dog attacking me, the whole system is activated. From the control centre in the middle of the brain, the soul sends messages out all around the body. Adrenalin is secreted to give extra strength to the muscles (so that one can run). The heart starts to pump faster, the breathing becomes shallower and the palms begin to sweat. While it may seem that all the different organs have their own sensing and feeling systems, the whole operation is so split-second fast that the coordination of sensations and responses by the soul from its own special cockpit in the centre of the brain passes unnoticed – it so seems that the body is creating the sensations and responses, but they are actually coordinated and controlled by the soul. In this way, if I feel something in my heart for or from something or someone, it's really being processed by me, the thinking being, the soul and then reflected in my heart.

Thought for Today

When we become slower to judge, we become open to understanding the other person's inner concerns. When we see the inner need behind the other person's expression, we're able to speak to what is in their heart. Sometimes without saying a word, we're able to communicate more through our eyes, with a smile, through facial expressions, a gesture, or our posture ...

Detachment brings the power of realisation, which enables recognition of one's mistakes.

Projection:

Detachment means to be detached from our old ways of thinking and habits. When we are detached, we have the power of realisation, which enables us to correct our mistakes without giving excuses. If not we'll just continue to prove to ourselves and to others that we are right even if we are not.

Solution:

When someone points at my mistake, it is good to get detached from my old nature and ask myself if there is anything that I can do to correct myself. When I am able to do this I get the power to learn and continue to improve myself with every criticism that comes my way.

The Location And The Form Of The Soul

When I look in a mirror I don't see ‘my’ reflection but that of my body. The soul is actually looking through the windows of the eyes from some point inside the head. When viewed from the front, this region appears to be between and slightly above the line of the eyebrows. As the brain is the control centre for all of the various processes of the body - metabolism, the nervous, endocrine, immunological, and lymphatic systems - it makes sense that the soul be located somewhere in the brain. Just as the driver in a car sits behind the wheel with the steering wheel in his hands, the soul sits in a specific point in the centre of the brain. This is important to know for meditation purposes because it is the place to which attention is first directed in the effort to concentrate the thoughts: I am the soul, a tiny point of conscious light energy centered in the spot between the eyebrows.

Become the ones who make efforts continuously and experience constant self-progress.

Check if there is any doubt within you whether you'll succeed or not. If there is any such doubt it means that your effort is not continuous. Where there is constant effort you experience constant progress. Each day remind yourself of at least one thing that you have achieved for the day. When you make a habit in this way, you will be able to notice and experience the fruit of the effort that you put in.

To experience peace is to be in one powerful stage.

Projection:

The more the thoughts we have, the lesser the peace that is experienced in the mind. When we are able to maintain a powerful thought throughout the day whatever the situations come our way we can experience constant peace.

Solution:

Right in the morning let me take a thought that is positive and powerful. For example, 'victory is my birthright' or 'I am always fortunate'. Whatever the situations I come across, let me emerge this thought and I will be able to maintain peace.

Different Forms Of Anger

Depending on our basic belief system, past experiences and perception (understanding) of the present situations we are in, anger takes different forms, which emerge in our mind and get communicated to others through our behaviour:

1. Irritation
You create this when day-to-day events don't happen fast enough e.g. your flight gets delayed, you are made to wait in a queue, etc.
2. Frustration
You create this when events don't occur as per your desires and expectations.
3. Grudge
You create this when you believe that you have been wronged by someone in the past.
4. Resentment
You create this towards those that you think have insulted or offended you or when you are jealous of someone.
5. Hatred
You create this following your deep disapproval of another's actions.
6. Rage
You create this following the build up of anger normally in response to others' actions, which you label as obstructive or interfering, e.g. road rage.

You will be truly successful when you are loving and detached with the ones you come into contact with.

With all the people that you come into contact with throughout the day, check if you are able to have a balance between being loving and detached. Detachment doesn't mean to stay away from people, but to be with them and yet be detached. Make the practice of seeing only specialities, your own and that of others. This will enable you to maintain your self-respect and you will be able to find yourself both loving and detached.

The power of determination brings thought into practice.

Projection:

We do have a number of thoughts that we would like to put into practice. Most of the times it doesn't happen that way and they remain merely thoughts. It is necessary to strengthen such thoughts with the power of determination and we will be able to make them practical.

Solution:

Let me think of something that I wanted to do but could not bring into practice. Now let me take this thought once again and see why it is important for me to bring it into practice. Once I understand this I will be able to be determined to put it into practice.

The Causes Of Fear (cont.)

Yesterday we had discussed some of the causes of fear. Some more are:

. The desire to be recognized, appreciated and valued.
. Experiences of the past that have produced disappointment, insecurity, worry or emotional or mental exhaustion.
. Attachments and dependencies generate fear.
. The habit of seeing situations and people in a negative way.
. Dishonesty - When you have done things that you know are not right, you know there will be negative after effects, and this provokes fear within.
. The ego being afraid to 'die'. It justifies itself and resists. We wear masks that cover our true identity. We become selfish.

Become a destroyer of obstacles and not an obstacle.

Check what kind of feelings you are having when you are faced with an obstacle. Do you have the courage to overcome it or do you yourself become an obstacle stopping others' and your own progress with your negative thoughts. Make this practice firm whatever the situation you are in, "I am victorious and success is my birthright" when you remember that obstacles come to teach you for the future and make you progress, you will be free from negative thoughts.

Happiness has the power to change even hopeless situations into hopeful ones.

Projection:

There is so much power in being happy that even in the most hopeless situations we can keep ourselves peaceful and happy. When we are able to maintain this stage we will find that things change for the better too. Our hope will work to change the situation.

Solution:

Let me think of one situation that I am not happy with. Let me make sure I accept the situation as it is without expecting it to change. This acceptance will give me the faith that things are happening for the best. With this faith even the most hopeless situation will turn positive.

The Causes Of Fear

Fear can be caused by:

. Ignorance - When you don't know how your colleague in office is, or when you don't know the intentions of the other, you are afraid. When you don't understand, you are afraid.
. A lack of inner preparation for the situation - For example, if you go unprepared to an exam, you will be afraid of failing it.
. A lack of clear knowledge on how to avoid or recognize actions that bring about situations which are dangerous for one's wellbeing.
. Insecurity in general and specifically, about your qualities and your own capacity.
. Lack of faith in yourself.
. Mistrust.
. The inability to open oneself.

Tomorrow we shall discuss some more causes of fear.

Thought for Today

The Power To Tolerate

Real tolerance does not just mean putting up with a difficult situation, and still counting how many times I have had to endure it. Tolerance means that no matter what stones come my way, I recognize that those throwing them are empty, and so I continue to share good things with them.

If, through my meditation, I am receiving unlimited power from the Supreme, my heart will remain open and I won't count how many times the other person has insulted me. This may sound like an impossible thing to do. Meditation, however, makes the impossible possible. Experienced meditators, who have developed a very deep, personal relationship with the Supreme, and keep the Supreme as their constant companion, display just such a power. It's immensely worthwhile for all of us to move towards that goal.

True tolerance is made possible by openness and acceptance. It doesn't mean clenching my teeth and carrying on, come what may. Repression or suppression of my feelings can cause me all sorts of internal damage, and end in an explosion and damage others too.
Real tolerance is a state in which, firstly, I have to be very clear about my own contribution to a difficult situation. If the difficult situation is signaling a need for me to change my own behaviour, I have to be open and responsive to that.

The power of truth will enable us to learn from our mistakes.

Projection:

The power of truth within will enable us to learn from all situations. When things go wrong we will be able to check ourselves and improve instead of giving excuses to the self and others. When we give excuses we will not be able to learn and progress.

Self Empowerment

Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Now make up a series of questions, which will judge how effectively you are using these strengths to improve your personal and professional life, and what negative effects are your weaknesses (shortcomings) having on the same. These are some of the questions that you can ask yourself at the end of each week to monitor your self-progress:

e.g. Which strengths if acquired would help me improve my worth (value) at the workplace? Is any weakness of mine proving to be an obstacle (barrier) in maintaining a healthy relationship with my family? Am I using my strengths in empowering (strengthening) others? Does any weakness exist inside me, which if removed would improve my level of contentment (satisfaction) and lead to greater peace of mind?

Note down three main strengths and three important roles that you play in your life. Now check if your strengths properly match the roles. If they do not match, think if there is a new personality characteristic you need to develop. If a particular role is self-selected, if it does not match your strengths, is it a good role for you to be playing?

Life is like a Pendulum

In our quest to seek balance, like a pendulum, we sometimes swing from one side to the other. Sometimes we swing wildly and maybe that's because we must explore both extremes and all points in between. If we don't, there's the possibility that we may get drawn to what's not been examined. The one who uses the virtues within is the one who is divine.

Projection:

When we are constantly using the virtues that we have, we are able to sustain the divinity within. Irrespective of whether people do it or not, it is more important to see what we have to lose if we lose touch with these virtues and what we have to gain if we work with these virtues. Working with virtues consistently gives more power than working with weaknesses. It gives power to both the situation and ourselves too.

Solution:

Let me practice with one quality each day. When I continue to create a thought of positivity and sustain it through out the day, I am able to experience the divinity at all times. Even if the situation outside is not conducive to this experience, I am still able to experience my inner divinity.

God As The Supreme Companion

Meditation is not only something experienced when all is quiet and I am sitting alone, free from my cares and responsibilities, it is a practical stage as well. The best way to experience meditation whilst performing action is to have a relationship with the Supreme Being or God as a Supreme Companion. He is the true companion of the soul, the one who is absolutely dependable and who never lets you down. Unlike human souls, He is not limited by distance and time; He can be with you at any time or at any place. With the Supreme’s company I feel I can face anything on the field of action. I am not alone. He is behind me giving me inspiration, in front of me giving me guidance and beside me giving friendship. God's role is my role also. The vision that he has of the world and other souls i.e. creating a world which is full of His qualities, is the vision that I have. In His company I am flying, as He protects me from sorrow. I experience complete detachment. My companion is the ultimate authority. Knowing and having Him as a friend, I know and have everything. Nothing negative or no negative behavior of anyone else interests or attracts me or brings me down.

Meditation - Gradually experience the following words in your mind:
I am a soul... acting on this world stage... a companion of God… I am with my highest and truest companion... the sweet Supreme Being, my Father... who is ever constant... walking… talking... sitting... standing... working with me. He is my companion helping me... showing me the way... I am with the Supreme Authority... Every action is filled with his power... His company colours me with his qualities...I see others as He sees them... with such kindness and mercy… I also, just like him, can accommodate all souls in my heart... I begin to feel so much pure love for others... I radiate His virtues... His sweetness... I am His instrument to bring about world transformation (change).

Thought for Today

The power of pack up means I recognize the damage caused by such waste, and put an end to it. As I renew the awareness of myself as a soul, in relationship with the Supreme Soul, the needle of my attention is lifted above the groove, letting me come fully into the present.

I also learn to be selective in what I choose to remember or forget from the past. This is not dishonest; in fact, it is being honest to my task. Human beings in any case have highly selective memories. We not only see and understand differently, according to our individual interests and agendas, but our attitudes and perception also determine the memories we choose to store.

Meditation enables me to exercise this option quite deliberately, picking up those scenes from the past that nourish me and help me move forward, and rejecting memories that pollute my mind and slow me down.

Meditation And Health

Each original quality of the self or soul is specially required for nourishing and empowering one human body system. The quality of peace is responsible for taking care of the respiratory system, joy for the gastrointestinal system, love for the circulatory system, bliss for the endocrine system, knowledge for the brain and nervous system, purity for the immune system and the five senses and power for the muscular and skeletal systems.

Each one of us has at least one body system, which is most prone to disease. When our mind is under the influence of stressful emotions, there is a decrease in the flow, from the soul to this body system, of that quality which is required by it for its nourishment, which leads to the development of disease in this system over a period of time e.g. when an individual with a weak respiratory system is in a negative state of mind, there is a decrease in the flow of the quality of peace to the respiratory system which in turn can lead to a disorder like asthma.

Meditation helps me to acquire that discipline of finishing negative and wasteful thoughts i.e. inculcate the power to pack up. As the habit of self-observation develops, it doesn't take long to understand how negative thoughts and feelings literally negate my central aim, of re-emerging my true nature. Negativity drains the battery of the soul faster than anything else does.

Projection:

Commitment for the self means to have the recognition of one's own weakness. It also means to have a clear vision for one's own progress and perfection. This will then create a powerful identity within which will enable us to do away with weaknesses.

The Faculties (Energies) Of The Soul (cont.)

The intellect is used to assess thoughts. This is the faculty (energy) of the soul used for understanding and decision-making which stands out as the most crucial faculty of the three. With the deepening and broadening of the intellect, clear understanding and realization of knowledge becomes natural, and the power to decide and reason becomes clear. It is the intellect which remembers, discriminates, judges and exercises its power in the form of will-power.

"Sanskaras" is a Hindi word which best describes what we could call "impressions" or "subconscious or unconscious mind". They are the record of all the soul's past experiences and actions. Sanskaras can take the forms of habits, talents, nature, personality traits, beliefs, values or instincts. Every action performed by a soul either creates a sanskar (this is how a habit begins) or reinforces an old one. Whatever impression is etched in the soul remains within the soul, forming a complete collection of all the experiences that the soul has had. When we speak of defects, specialties or virtues we are referring to the sanskaras. The sanskaras are the basis of the soul's individuality.

On the path of meditation, I am a traveler, on a magnificent journey. I have to make some firm choices about I what will take with me on this journey. To pack up means to learn the lessons of the present, then to move on, letting the past be past. It means not carrying the baggage of the past into my present and future, but traveling lightly from one day to the next, keeping only what is most useful to me. That way, I'll enjoy the journey more, and move faster in the direction of my choice.

Projection:

While moving towards the destination, we generally tend to get distracted with even the little things that happen. Even a small negative or positive incident is enough to distract our thoughts from the destination. We become so busy with such things that our vision moves away and there is no movement forward.

Solution:

I need to first clarify my goal. Once I have done this, I need to take care that my vision is focused on it. It is more important to keep my energies focused towards the goal.

Effect of Food On The Mind (cont.)

Three categories of foods are defined corresponding to the particular energy that exists in them.

The first is 'Sattvik' or sentient food (explained yesterday).

The second group is 'Rajasik' or mutative food - it contains a mutative energy of restlessness, constant movement or change. When this force is consumed, the mind and body become agitated and nervous, unable to calm down and relax. These foods include caffeinated drinks such as coffee and many teas, hot spices, fermented foods and some medicinal drugs.

The third group is 'Tamasik' or static food - this type of food has a static force of dullness, inertia, intoxication, and attraction towards sensuality (body-consciousness), decay and death. Death occurs when the other two energies (sentient and mutative) are spent and the static force is the only dominant force. Static foods include meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, mushrooms, onions and garlic.

True progress brings progress in others as much as for the self.

It is usually believed that self-progress and progress of others are totally separate. It is believed that where there is thought for the progress of the self, there is selfishness and there is no benefit for those around. In fact, selfishness in an extreme form can also have a negative influence on those around. In whatever we do we have to check and see if there is any benefit for others along with whatever benefit we are getting. If there isn't we can check to see if there is a better way of doing what we are doing which could have a positive influence on at least one person. Then we will find ourselves benefitting doubly. We will get the blessings from others along with the personal benefit we get.

The one who knows the art of connecting to others is successful.

Projection:

We are normally good to people who are good to us. But when someone is not behaving well, we tend to change our attitude, our response and our behaviour towards that person. We wait for the other person to change, in order to change ourselves. So neither do we find change in others nor in ourselves.

Solution:

When I know the art of perceiving others’ specialities and connecting to them, I am always successful. I am then not dependent on the other person’s behaviour for my own growth. I am able to see each one’s positive aspect and take it in myself too. So I am richer with each interaction.

Effect of Food On The Mind

All foods have their own subtle (non-physical) vibrations or energy levels. Food feeds more than the stomach; it not only affects the working of the body but its subtle energy influences the mind. Consumption of food allows the energy levels to have an effect on our system, for better or worse.

Experimenting with the effects of different foods, three categories were defined corresponding to the particular energy that existed in them.

The first is 'Sattvik' or sentient food – this type of food if filled with vibrations of purity, self-awareness, love, peace and joy. This category of food includes fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, grains, milk and dairy products. It helps our emotions and mind to remain in a stable and peaceful state. Fear And The Law Of Attraction

You should be careful with what you are afraid of, because you can invoke (call for or attract) it.

Fear is like a magnet. If you are afraid that something will happen to you and you get obsessed about it happening, you are effectively invoking it to happen.

If you are very afraid that something might happen to you and you begin to visualize that it might happen or how it might happen, this terrifies you and it closes you into a phobia and a state of fear. What you are doing is invoking it to happen, because the power of the mind and visualization is very great. If you are afraid that you might be robbed, or of meeting with an accident, or of losing, you are invoking the robbery, the accident and the loss. Fear of rejection produces rejection.

That is how extraordinary the power of our mind is. That does not mean to say that we should not take the necessary precautions. An aged woman knows that to fall can mean her bones might break more easily. She should not be preoccupied with a fear of falling; she simply needs to apply attention and precaution when walking. But when precaution is confused with fear, it is not a healthy precaution or one that is free from worries.

Faith in one's progress brings contentment.

Even when the situation is not according to what is expected, there is contentment for the one who has faith in his own progress. Such a person will not just sit back waiting for things to change nor will he just curse his fate. Instead he'll do his best and use all his resources in bettering the situation.

The understanding that all life's situations are a training for me, automatically keeps me content in all situations. There is naturally an experience of constant progress and a feeling of having gained something from all situations.

Then see yourself sitting in the room and filling the room with your vibrations of peace.

When challenging situations come our way, there is a tendency to think in a cyclic way to overcome that problem. That is, the mind thinks of the same things again and again to overcome the problem. The more the mind creates such thoughts, the more it is difficult to find a solution. There is no happiness and peace of mind at such times.

Solution:

Happiness touches the heart and enables the creativity to come from within. When I am happy I am able to enjoy and make the best use of each and every moment of my life. The one who is happy doesn't wait for the right opportunity to be creative, but uses each moment as a chance for using creativity - for bringing newness. I do something new, unique and different. So I also have the satisfaction of having done my best.

To Complement And Not To Compete (cont.)

We all have a place within this beautiful embroidery of life; let us know it, enjoy it, express it as our right, but never overdo it because we feel our role or position is 'more advanced', or 'better' than others. Sometimes, when there is a sense of personal or collective emptiness, there is the need to be recognized, which creates attachment to your own talents, role or virtues.

We have to learn to complement rather than compete. Nature works on the principle of complementarity. This can be seen with the seasons, day and night, the continual cyclical process of birth, growth, maturity, decay, death and rebirth. Even our bodies work on this principle. Look at the face! Each face has two eyes, one nose, one mouth, two ears, all in the right position and functioning in an appropriate way. Which of these is more important? Would you say the eyes are more important, so you would prefer to have three eyes and no nose? Or would you say the nose is more important, so you would prefer to have three noses and no ears? We cannot think like this because it is absurd and illogical. Each feature has equal value and when we recognize the equal value of all things, then we stop being illogical - comparing, competing, feeling superior or inferior, or striving to be what we are not. In a society that functions, can everyone be a doctor, an engineer or a farmer? Everyone has different talents and positions because different tasks have to be fulfilled if the whole society is to run well. If we examine life carefully, we realize that the recognition of this principle of complementarity is the basis of creating a peaceful and happy coexistence, because the vision of equality respects and honors the differences.
