Thought for Today

Like the ocean, life is calm one minute, turbulent the next.

We can't control events anymore than we can stop the tides, but we all have powerful inner resources to help us surf the waves and ride out the storms. Resilience is inner strength that allows us to float above difficult circumstances by maintaining our fortitude and good humour, no matter what may arise.

Message for the day 19.03.2010

To see specialties in all is to become special.

Projection:

Most of the time, I'm caught up in looking at people's negativity. When I see some negative quality in someone, I immediately make his specialties a background and start focusing on his negative traits. The more I think of these negative qualities, the more they occupy my conscious mind, changing my reactions too.

Solution:

It is natural to be colored or influenced by what I see. If I see specialties, I'll take on a little of that and if I see weaknesses, I'll take on a little of that too. So I need to make an attempt to look at only specialties and encourage others too to use their specialties.

Compassion can take place without emotionally "putting yourself in another's shoes". Compassion is staying in a positive emotion whilst understanding where the person is at and allowing them space.

A Voyage To The Centre of the Self (Visualization)

Personal understanding lies far below the outer surface of the self. We might call this place our "centre", the true core of who we are. This visualization will help you locate your own place of truth.

1. Close your eyes and concentrate on making your mind peaceful.
2. Imagine that you are floating on a warm ocean without effort.
3. Now you are gently swimming underneath the ocean, feeling increasingly calmed by the water's waves. Just underneath you, the ruins of a ship are visible. This is the outer shell of your mind.
4. As you approach, you see that the ship's woodwork has decayed. You swim in through an opening. The further into the ship you swim, the cleaner and brighter the water becomes.
5. At the centre of the ship, unspoilt, lies a treasure of precious objects, each one a characteristic of your true self. Spend time re-discovering yourself. Pick up each object and reflect on its meaning e.g. a coin might represent your honesty, a chalice (a cup or goblet) your generosity. Swim back to the surface, relaxed in
the knowledge of your worth.

To keep the aim in front of us is to move forward with contentment.

Projection:

Several times there are situations that are negative where we have to face things that are not really what we are expecting or wanting. At such times we tend to get disheartened and experience discontentment. Our state of mind becomes such that we can no longer experience peace.

Solution:

The solution at such times is to keep our vision clear on our aim. When all our thoughts and energy are concentrated on our aim, we will be able to consider any negative scene that comes our way as only a side-scene. We can easily ignore all such situations and so our mind is at rest or peace.

Thought for Today

Honesty to the self brings progress at a quick speed.

To be honest with one self is to be truly honest. When there is honesty with the self, there is the ability to see things clearly. So one is able to take responsibility for the mistakes committed and have the enthusiasm to learn from them. So there is constant change and progress visible in such a person. At all times there is the ability to bring about change. When we are honest with ourselves, we are able to find the joy of learning from our mistakes. Mistakes don't make us heavy because we know we have something to learn from them. There is constantly enthusiasm to bring about a change and move forward. So we find that we are constantly progressing and also becoming an inspiration for many to bring about change. Our honesty, therefore, makes us a true leader.

Understanding The Quality of Peace (cont..)

To experience true inner peace take the following thoughts into your mind. Then experience each thought by holding it in your awareness.

Let us now move away from the demands and the needs of our noisy world, and slip into our inner world, into the quiet, still room of the mind........

It is a place, a space of calm, stillness and peace........
Here, I can let go of my concerns, worries and constant fears........
In this dimension of silence, in this plain of peace, voices grow distant (faraway) and quiet........
And in this arena (space) of inner calm and soft peacefulness, my racing thoughts begin to slow down, begin to lose momentum and are absorbed into that inner peace........
I am surrounded by silence, by peace........
And that soft vibration soothes (relaxes) my mind and calms my thoughts and I am held in that spell of tranquility (peacefulness)........
I bath in the inner light of the inner self........
And I float and drift in this sea of silence, in this sea of peace........
For here the waves of the world cannot come and I feel light and free and calm........

To be a donor means to give at each step and increase one's own stock.

Projection:

Usually it seems very difficult to be a donor - to give from whatever resources we have. The thought often arises in the mind that we cannot give because we are ourselves not complete or full. We find ourselves constantly trying to fill ourselves and we then have no time or thought for giving to those around us.

Solution:

We have a lot of treasures within us which we can give to those around us, our virtues, our specialties etc. Even if we have just a little and give to the others, we will find ourselves benefiting. For having given from whatever we have, we find that these treasures begin to increase within ourselves too.

The ability to find solutions comes when I know the art of listening.

Projection:

I normally get to hear a lot of things and tend to get coloured by all that I hear. The more I hear about negative things, the more difficult it becomes to maintain my own positivity. Yet I can do nothing to ignore the things that make me feel negative.

Solution:

I need to know to listen to people rather than just hearing them. To know to listen means the ability to transform negative into positive. Just as a doctor listens to all the negative aspects about the disease etc and still knows only to give the medicine, I too need to listen in order to give what is required.

Thought for Today

The true joy of living lies in the ability to enjoy the present moment.

The one who is able to remain in the present is able to learn from the past and bring out the best from the self. Also there is a clear vision of the future, so all the energies are directed towards that vision. The mind is neither totally caught up with the past nor with the future. Since there is attention on the present moment, there is the ability to use it to the fullest extent. When we are in the present we are able to remain in the awareness of the gifts of the present. Having learnt from the past we are able to enrich ourselves from the different experiences that we have had. As we are also clear about where we have to go, we enjoy the journey and also move on towards constant success.

To have learnt means to bring about a practical change.

Projection:

From all that happens, I usually understand a lot of things and take important lessons. But sometimes I find myself making the same mistakes again and again. So I am not able to bring about real change.

Solution:

Once I realise and learn from a mistake that has happened, I need to spend some time in understanding it even further. I need to ensure I don't ever repeat the same mistake. This will enable me to bring about real change.

Being An Effective Manager

It is interesting to see how water is a symbol for our consciousness, our self. Just as water has the ability to take many forms according to the place, space and immediate environment, so our consciousness can take many forms according to what is seen to be the need of the moment. Knowing what form to take in different situations at the workplace (office) will determine how effective a manager you are. Here are a few 'ways of water' that correspond to possible states of being.

1. You can be like ice, solid and stable, and able to support others as they face and go through their life challenges and occasional (once in a while) crisis (problem).
2. You can be like a fountain, available and able to quench (fulfill) the thirst of others for understanding and knowledge. But for this you must have drunk at your own fountain for some time (you should have understood and experienced spiritual knowledge first).
3. You can be like a cloud, raining your knowledge and experience across a wide area reaching many parts, places and people.
4. You can be like a lake. When the lake is calm and still it is like glass as it perfectly reflects both mountain and sky. When you are calm and still, you provide the perfect mirror for others to see and know themselves with absolute clarity (clearness).
5. You can be like snow, lightly sprinkling (showering) the coolness of your spiritual qualities on all, and in so doing helping to cool the angriest people around you.

The way to bring transformation in others is to have mercy for them.

Projection:

Inspite of wanting to bring about a positive change in people and working towards it, I rarely find that kind of change that I expect. People continue to display their old patterns of behaviour and finally I end up only feeling disappointed or frustrated.

Solution:

Real change can come in people only when I am able to have a vision of mercy for them. With mercy I am able to perceive and bring out the best in people without actually being caught up with expectations. Once I am able to see the positive qualities I am able to encourage them to use these qualities.

The power to merge brings success in relationships.

The specialty of the ocean is to merge. The most beautiful pearl is made of the dirt that is thrown into the ocean. So also the power to merge actually allows one to look at the positivity in spite of the obvious negativity that is expressed by the other person. So the relationship with the other person is only with their positivity. When we are able to merge the negativity of others, and look at the positive aspect in them instead, we can automatically experience being light and positive within. Also we find others relating to us with their positivity. We are able to be successful in our relationship with others, however difficult the personality traits of the other person may be.

Projection:

Many times while I am sincerely working towards my task, I find myself losing my enthusiasm. I also might find people not very happy with me or my work. I do make an attempt to understand their feelings but fail to do so Such negative responses further reduce my enthusiasm.

Solution:

I need to develop the art of looking at specialities in people. The more I am able to see their positive qualities, the more I am able to relate to them with that speciality. This encourages the other person further to use that speciality. This will naturally keep me constantly enthusiastic.

To bring equality in whatever I understand, desire and do is to be truly successful.

Projection:

Although my understanding of right and wrong is really good, I am not usually able to be or feel successful. This is because I notice a mismatch between what I know and what I want. So I am not able to bring that knowledge into action.

Solution:

A conscious effort needs to be put in from my side to compare and see which is better for me - what I know is right or what I feel I want. To be set on the seat of one's own position is to be free from the opposition of situations.

To be set on the seat of one's own position means to remain stable and beyond fluctuation even in challenging situations. This comes when there is an experience of the inner qualities and strength. So during difficult times, it is this inner strength that is revealed. So there is no opposition from even the challenging situations that come up. When we know our own inner qualities and strength and have this awareness in a conscious way, we are able to set ourselves on an elevated position. No opposition, however powerful it may be, can shake us from our seat of self-respect. In fact, we experience becoming firmer in our position with every opposition that comes.

Communication

What are the ways to improve communication?

* Listen with both ears. I should be an active listener by tuning in fully and being present fully with the person and with the moment. If I am not, I listen through one ear and let it out of the other, or I only half listen, which finally creates misunderstandings.

* Understand where the other person is coming from. Do not just assume, imagine or judge; when we do this, our critical vision prevents others from expressing what they wish to say. Then, because of wrong or half-right assumptions, others are not given the possibility to improve, or express, outside the boundaries of what we think of them. To give others a true chance to express themselves, we must not place our own boundaries around them.

* Think before speaking. This is not something new, but however often we hear it, we forget to apply it. To think before speaking means to show consideration to the other and then we say the right thing, at the right time, in the right way.

(To be continued….)

With the balance of love and discipline, energy can be saved while speaking.

Projection:

Throughout the day we find ourselves having to give explanations or corrections to so many people. When we do this we find that we have to spend a lot of words. In the process we tend to lose a lot of our energy and find ourselves tired.

Solution:

In order to save our energy and to use fewer words we need to have the balance of love and discipline. Discipline will enable us to give the right directions while love will make our directions effective. So we find that just a few words would be enough to get our message across.

The Power Of Concentration

Most of us live our life in a state of absence. Most of us go AWOL (absent without leave) hundreds of times a day! Watch your thoughts and you will notice that they either go into the past or in to the future and you allow them to carry you with them. That's why you are rarely truly present, truly here and now, truly in this moment. Most people are totally unaware of this and, as a result, only fully experience a small part of their life.

The practice of experiencing silence (detaching yourself from action) through meditation for atleast a minute every hour increases your ability to concentrate and it gradually enables you to be here and now. You will learn to know, feel, see and be at peace, in love, joyful and contented ... now. And in time these feelings will be present for you wherever you are and during whatever you are doing. Peace, love and contentment are not in the past or the future, they are only and always in the now, only now.

To be in the awareness of our own specialty is to be free from negativity.

Projection:

When we perceive negativity in others, we find ourselves very easily influenced by it. We then react negatively to them and are not able to maintain our own positivity. All our specialties remain hidden in such a negative atmosphere and we continue to be negative too.

Solution:

Like a rose we need to maintain our originality and uniqueness while being amongst the thorns. Instead of blaming others and their negativity for our own negativity, we need to practice being positive and working with our original qualities. Then we will never complain but will always use our own specialties.
