Discovering Natural Virtues / Qualities

Meditation enables us to achieve self-awareness and self-realization (a true sense of who we really are), and discover our basic qualities or specialties, which lay hidden within each of us.

www.brahmakumaris.com
www.bkwsu.org
www.bkinfo.in

1. Use a flower as a basis for meditation. You should be completely focused on the flower, and no other thoughts should enter your mind.

2. How might the qualities of the flower reflect aspects of your self?

3. Now consider each different characteristic you have given the flower. Think about each of it in terms of how it might correspond to your personality.

4. If the flower has any negative aspects (is one of the petals drying out?), what might this be telling you about yourself? Concentrate on repairing the negative, making your self-image wholly positive.

5. Connect with the flower in this way, until you feel that the beauties you see are a direct reflection of your virtues.

In the above exercise, the form of the flower's many petals may be seen to correspond to your qualities; the fragrance may correspond to the quality of your thoughts; and the colour may refer to some of your positive moods or emotions (green for your love of the world, red for calm assertion (positive aggression), blue for sympathy). What you see, in the moment of meditation, is what you are.

The Definitions Of Meditation

We can define meditation as the following Rs':

1. Returning : Meditation is the technique of returning to the original qualities of
the self, namely peace, purity, love, bliss and wisdom. We can only do that by taking our thoughts inwards.

Meditation: “I begin to find my original strength by collecting the energy of my mind. With my concentrated thought, I focus on meeting my real self.”

2. Relaxing : In meditation, the mind disconnects itself from the thoughts of anything external and connects with the inner self. In this way, it is able to receive the positive current of the original strength of the self: a peaceful source of energy. However, at first, it can be difficult to disconnect the many plugs of our everyday life: the plugs of attachment, speed, worry, being busy, etc. It does take some effort.

Meditation: “As I connect to the 'point source' of energy of the self, which is located in the centre of the forehead, I start to relax, to remove the many tensions and demands of the outside world from the mind.”

Even the most difficult task is made easy with the cooperation of all.

Projection:

When given a responsibility we usually think of doing it alone. We usually feel it is much easier not to involve many. We do this in order to avoid the different kinds of personalities that we have to deal with.

Solution:

When involved in a big task, we need to see to it that we involve many. When we involve many and make sure we make use of their specialities even the most difficult task will be made easy. Secondly, the good wishes of all involved will be for the task which will add to its success.

Thought for Today

To forget the mistakes of the past is to win the game.

To forget the mistakes of the past means to take the learning from them and then forget them. When there is the ability to do this, there is also the ability to make the best use of the resources available in the present. There is a clear vision for the future and constant effort to move towards it. When we are able to forgive our mistakes after understanding how to correct them, we are able to forget them. This keeps us mentally free and we are able to move forward with lightness. Whatever situations come our way, we are able to enjoy them like a game.

Thought for Today

The real reason why we sometimes experience a lack of real, deep lasting happiness in our lives is dependency.

We are taught to make our happiness dependent on some event, condition, person, object etc. This is why we keep delaying our happiness until things are just right in our life. We think we will be happy in the future and then wonder why we are not happy now. But life is never just right, and the future never comes – there is only now! And that's why, in order to be happy we must make our happiness a decision and not a dependency. This may seem slightly difficult in the beginning, because we have just spent our life being dependent on acquiring something or someone, or seeing the result we desired, or wanting some pain to go away, before we allow ourselves to be happy.

Realizing The Form Of The Supreme Soul (God)

The Supreme Soul is a soul, with the same form as human souls. The only difference is in the qualities, not in the size. We have rightly thought that he is great, but His greatness doesn't mean that He is expanded throughout the entire universe. The power of a soul has no connection with its physical dimensions at all.

Some people are of the view that the Supreme Soul is formless. Anything that exists must have a form. Qualities indeed are formless, but the source of those qualities cannot be without form. For example, fragrance has no form but the flower does. Just as the sun has form but the light and warmth it radiates do not. The Supreme Soul has a form, but the qualities radiating from Him do not. In other words the Supreme Soul is not love but the source of love; the Supreme Soul is not truth but the source of truth, etc. If he is formless then communication with Him is impossible. The very word "yoga" implies a meeting between two entities, both of which have a form, if not a physical one, a subtle (non-physical) one.

The Supreme Soul is a conscient (living) micro star just as I am. Knowing his form, I can bring that image onto the screen of my mind and begin immediately to experience his powers and qualities by associating them with that beautiful form. There is much more value in meditating (concentrating) on his form and qualities than in focusing on one's breath, candle flames, etc.

Success means to have positive thoughts which bring right actions in our life.

Projection:

When things go wrong we usually find ourselves flooded with negative thoughts. We, no longer can think right and so our actions go wrong, too. We try to correct our actions but we cannot succeed in it and so we give up.

Solution:

We need to change the way we think before we can think of changing our actions. Success comes in the ability to maintain positive thoughts even in the most negative situations. For this, we need the practice of maintaining positive thoughts under all circumstances.

The Distinction (Difference) Between Love And Attachment

Attachment is a mental state. It is a relationship we have with someone in our own minds. When we become attached to someone we use their image to fill our mind. We find our thoughts are constantly filled with their image and the memories of their behavior. It is not that we should never think about others, it is more about thinking about others only when it is necessary, and as we do so, to make sure we don’t lose our self in their image. This will finally free us of dependency. Symptoms of attachment, can be found when there is any personal desire or expectation of the other person. Desire causes the change of the energy of our love into fear. We forget we are already a source of what we have been taught to need and desire. Attachment desires, love never desires and it has no expectations. It doesn’t need to! As soon as you have any desire from others, or expectations of others, and your happiness becomes dependent on the desire or expectation being met, you are already giving birth to fear and anger, otherwise known as negative emotions, otherwise known as stress, otherwise known as suffering. Love never causes pain, attachment does.

Meditation – Experiencing My Original Home (cont.)

Along with reading over the following words slowly and silently, make a sincere effort to create images of them in the eye of your mind:

I focus myself on the self, the soul, a golden point of light........
I stay between the eyebrows in the middle of the forehead........
I radiate golden rays of peace, purity and love in all directions........
In this awareness of I the soul, with the power of my mind I can travel beyond the limits of my physical organs........
I visualize myself gradually going out from this physical body........
I, the sparkling star like energy, fly into the night sky........
I see myself floating above thousands of buildings and lights........
Slowly I rise higher and higher to enter space........
I am surrounded by millions of stars and planets........
Slowly I see myself flying beyond the world of five elements........
I, the golden star, enter another world, a soft golden-red light world........
A world of sweet silence and peace........
full of peaceful light stretching very very far away........
I feel pure warmth here, surrounded by light........
I the point of light shine in this sixth element........
I am free of all tensions, extremely light.........
This is where I belong, This is my home........
I recognize this place........
I had forgotten it, but now I have rediscovered it........

Spend a few minutes in this positive experience and then gradually come downwards to take your seat back in the physical body.

It slows us down and makes us more considerate. When an obstacle comes - THANK it! When you say 'thank-you', you're actually ready to participate in a transformational process. Meditation – Experiencing My Original Home

In meditation, I focus my mind and intellect on that region which is called by names like “soul world”, “paramdham”, “nirvandham”, “shantidham” and so on. In fact, this is the region where the soul stays, when it has no body. Here the soul stays in the form of a star-like point of light, untouched by matter (five elements
including the body). In this world, there exists neither thought, word nor action; just complete stillness, sweet silence and peace. When I first take a physical body, it is from here that I the soul come down into the material world i.e. the earth, which is the field of action.

With the practice of meditation, my third eye (eye of the mind) opens; and I see and experience my original home as an infinite (very large, unmeasurable) world of very subtle (light) golden-red light, situated beyond the physical world of five elements, beyond the sun, moon and stars.

The sparkle of a true diamond reveals itself.

Projection:

Whenever we make a positive contribution, we expect those around us to recognize and appreciate it. But there are occasions where we do not receive such recognition and we then feel disheartened which in turn doesn't let us give our best in all we do.

Solution:

Whenever we find ourselves expecting people to appreciate us, we need to remind ourselves that the diamond doesn't need to speak about it's own sparkle but is recognized because of its specialty. We, too, need to discover our own specialty and work with it. We will, then, be satisfied whether we get recognition from others or not.

To limit your faith to one set of beliefs or an institutional belief system is to commit intellectual suicide. We shut down the possibility of being enlightened and enriched by others' experiences, which may be derived from their beliefs. We build a barrier between ourselves and our fellow travellers and then feel threatened, even in small and subtle ways, by someone of a different faith. The deepest faith is the intuitive conviction that all is as it should be, despite appearances, and that every human being is intrinsically good, despite appearances. This reminds us to keep our minds open, not take the law into our own hands, and look out for the best in others, regardless of what they say or do. Normally habits rule over the person and there is the inability to be a master over them. But to be a master is not to get influenced negatively by the habits but to be a stronger influence. When there is inner silence we are able to overcome the negative influence of our habits. Inner silence comes with an experience of positivity. Traffic Control

During the day we can stop for some moments to reflect (think) and remember to be peaceful and silent. This act of stopping is like putting a brake on the mind.
I observe in what direction my thoughts, words and actions are going and then, if necessary, redirect them (change their direction) or keep moving in the same direction with more clarity (clearness) and focus.

This practice of remembrance is called 'traffic control'. It is a means to refresh, recharge and reorient. When we forget to stop, the traffic of the mind becomes heavy and the driving tense, tiring, stressful and irritating and our mind and nerves seem ready to explode! To prevent all explosions and emotional eruptions, which ultimately destroy or damage our effectiveness, we need to stop. This is one practical use of remembrance.

To have the right attitude is to add meaning to circumstances.

Circumstances are like objects. They are not alive but they come to life depending on the kind of attitude that one has. If the attitude is positive, there is the ability to make situations positive too. But if the attitude is negative, even the most ordinary situations seem to be negative. So every action done with such an attitude creates a negative impact on one's own life and that of others too. When faced with a situation, if we are able to look at it in a positive way, we are able to make the best of the situation. We accept the situation as it is and we are able to be happy and light. The Significance Of Spiritual Energy (cont.)

Humans live and express themselves by means of four energy forms. We had explained two (physical and mental) yesterday. The other two are:

Emotional:

This is related with how you feel, moody or happy, anxious or nervous. If your feelings are negative, it will end up affecting your body. Feelings of irritability, anxiety or tension can cause stomach ulcers. Along the same lines, with positive feelings you will be able to overcome any illness much more easily.

Spiritual:

This is related to our original qualities and values. It is the energy of the soul. Our perspective of the world will depend on the state of our conscience. Spiritual energy guides and provides quality to our thoughts, and that is why it is the highest in the hierarchy.

These energies (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) form a hierarchy, in which physical energy is the lowest and spiritual energy the highest. If we are able to correctly channel the spiritual energy it will influence all the others in a positive way, beginning with our conscience, our feelings, and ending with our body.

The Significance Of Spiritual Energy

Humans live and express themselves by means of four energy forms:

Physical:

You breathe, eat and drink, and through this process you exchange atoms and molecules with the external environment and the inner environment of your body. A part of this energy will be used for growth and another part for physical movement.

Mental:

The energy and power of thought. This energy has a big influence over the origin of many illnesses, so much so that it has been estimated that as many as 85% of them are psychosomatic (directly or indirectly influenced by our state of the mind) in nature. Your thoughts are also the seeds of your feelings, your mood and your attitudes.

Self Management

Not only do we have expectations of others we also have great expectations of ourselves. And when we don’t live up to those expectations we can easily be upset with ourselves. We all know that being angry towards ourselves solves nothing and has no benefit. It simply deepens the habit and puts more emotional poison into our system. We only need to be gentle with ourselves, and accept ourselves as we are. There is no such thing as failure, only learning from situations – this is the kind of knowledge we need to have to heal the habit of remaining upset with ourselves.

When we get angry with others, we need to realize what we give to others is what we get back – this is the kind of knowledge we need in order to understand the story of our life, so we do not look back on life in anger as one filled with injustice. And yet, even with all the knowledge in the world, the habit of becoming angry will likely remain, even in subtle (fine) forms. So it helps the healing process to keep forgiving, keep forgetting, keep understanding and moving on. But most off all keep visualizing. We need to keep visualizing ourselves being free of anger in situations and relationships where before anger was common.

Preparations For Meditation

When you do sit down to meditate by all means focus your eyes on a candle or a picture, but unless you go beyond your awareness of the candle/picture it’s nothing more than a short concentration exercise. By all means put some relaxing music on in the background, but unless you go beyond the sound so that you no longer hear it, it’s likely to be nothing more than pleasant relaxation. By all means listen to a meditation commentary, but unless you, the self aware being or soul, actually goes where the commentary is pointing, assuming it’s pointing at your own being (soul), it’s not much more than hypnosis (a semi conscious stage). And by all means finding that special place, perhaps with special people, all sitting together in a special sitting arrangement in a special posture with thumbs touching forefingers in that ‘special’ way is important but not sufficient enough. However, while all of the above can be seen as good preparations for meditation, they should not be mistaken for meditation itself.

A single positive thought can end all negativity.

Projection:

When we find that our thoughts are negative in a situation, we tend to have more negative thoughts and we get caught in this cycle of negativity with no chance for transforming our thoughts.

Solution:

In order to change our thoughts we need to consciously take a powerful positive thought and repeat it to ourselves so that we can feel and experience it. This will enable us to free our mind from negativity. Our positive thought acts like a single switch, which dispels darkness.

Thought for Today

Are you able to think short-term and long-term at the same time? Manage short-term pressures and create space for thinking about the long-term. Thinking ahead is about being prepared for the opportunities that might await and the challenges that might emerge.

Soul Sustenance

Positive Consciousness

The habitual way in which you use the house you live in and its contents are all affected if you use them in a positive consciousness (mental state). The result is purification while interacting with the physical object, so that when the object is in use, it fulfills its function accurately, and it has also undergone a permanent change. This can happen when you are cleaning the house, cleaning any object in the house or preparing objects for a particular purpose. If such actions are done in a positive consciousness then the physical object will have such a vibration of peace and purity that no harm can be done with it and whatever action it is used to perform will be successful. Any other soul who comes into interaction with those objects will also feel the affect of their pure vibrations.

If we perform each action with the physical body in a positive consciousness, then the physical body gets purified and we can become free of illnesses.

In our relationships it is the same principle. First there needs to be that detachment in relations. Secondly, when there is a positive consciousness, I will find that my interactions have a purifying affect on all that I relate to and I can bring benefit to everyone I meet.

In this way a positive mental state enables all actions to be successful, whether at work or at home.

To be free from negative and waste is to be light and spread the light around.

Projection:

When we find ourselves having waste and negative thoughts we don't usually work to change them. It is because we don't realise the effect of such thoughts, which are harmful to both others and ourselves, too.

Solution:

We need to remind ourselves that the positivity in our mind is beneficial to both ourselves and others too. When we consciously remember the benefit of having positive thoughts we will not feel heavy because of the change that we have to bring about.

Thought for Today

Patience brings easy solutions.

What one cannot achieve with pressure can be very easily achieved with patience. Patience brings a state of calm inside which helps in finding the answers that already lie within. It gives courage to work on the problem in a cool and relaxed way till the solution is found. It brings creativity even to mundane things. When we are able remain patient even in the most challenging situations, we are able to remain calm. We don't let go of our inner peace but are able to be aware of our inner resources. We are able to retain our inner strength which gives us courage to find the solution for every problem.

To use the inner powers is to be a constant success.

Projection:

While moving forward I sometimes have doubts about my own power to succeed. So sometimes my powers remain hidden and I am not able to have the confidence or the enthusiasm to work on the situation.

Solution:

Whatever the situation I am faced with, I must not forget my own inner powers. I need to recognise and use those powers which will help me overcome the situation. When there is faith within me, my mind will be open to the recognition and the use of these inner powers.

Thought for Today

The one who is clean and clear inside is the one who becomes a mirror for others.

When there is the ability to realize and bring about a change, there is also the ability to make oneself clear and clean inside. Such a person naturally becomes a clean mirror for others to see their own perfection. He becomes an inspiration for those around for bringing about the best from within. When we are able to work to bring about a change in ourselves, we are able to remain in touch with our inner qualities. We have the joy of experiencing our inner perfection, which naturally flows and touches the lives of those around.

The way to bring transformation in others is to have mercy for them.

Projection:

In spite of wanting to bring about a positive change in people and working towards it, I rarely find that kind of change that I expect. People continue to display their old patterns of behaviour and finally I end up only feeling disappointed or frustrated.

Solution:

Real change can come in people only when I am able to have a vision of mercy for them. With mercy I am able to perceive and bring out the best in people without actually being caught up with expectations. Once I am able to see the positive qualities I am able to encourage them to use these qualities.

The method to stay in constant enthusiasm and to keep others enthusiastic is to see specialties in others.

Projection:

Many times while I am sincerely working towards my task, I find myself losing my enthusiasm. I also might find people not very happy with me or my work. I do make an attempt to understand their feelings but fail to do so. Such negative responses further reduce my enthusiasm.

Solution:

I need to develop the art of looking at specialties in people. The more I am able to see their positive qualities, the more I am able to relate to them with that specialty. This encourages the other person further to use that specialty. This will naturally keep me constantly enthusiastic.
