Thought for Today

Determination enables you to pass through the barriers of fear, doubt and insecurities. It's a strength that takes you on the road to success. Determination can't make it without patience. Patience teaches you not to push, but rather to wait and appreciate the game of life, knowing that everything will change at some point.

To be free from waste questions is to save time.

Projection:

When difficult situations come my way I usually have a lot of questions in my mind about it. I continue to ask myself why the situation has come and have no answers. These questions usually bring me no solution for the problems at hand but I continue to have waste thoughts.

Solution:

I need to understand the importance of the time that is in my hands. When I recognize the value of my time I will not waste time in unnecessary thoughts but will try to find a solution for the problem. If there is no solution for the problem I at least just stop thinking unnecessarily and just accept it.

Thought for Today

All desires end when there is the one desire to experience progress. It is believed normally that in order to progress one needs to have desires. But desires are not always fulfilled and unhappiness is experienced because of it. Then I am not able to appreciate whatever comes my way. I need to replace all my desires with one desire, i.e., the desire to experience progress. With this thought, I will be able to make the best use of what I get in the right way. When I move forward in this way making the best use of everything I will be able to experience constant progress.

When there is determination in my thoughts, the clouds of negative situations will fade away.

Projection:

There are a lot of negative situations that come my way, as I am moving along. During the difficult phase I tend to experience a lot of negativity within too, either in the form of fear, anger or pain. At that time the difficulty seems very big and seems to last forever.

Solution:

I need to recognize the fact that whatever difficulties I face are like passing clouds. These clouds come at their time and fade away at their time too. I need to develop the determination to work on my problems with this understanding. I will then be able to face the situation with ease.

Various Synonyms (Meanings) Of Peace

Peace has a number of synonyms, which all have slightly different shades of meaning:

Serenity
The feeling of contentment and being completely full with no need for further additions to the self; a feeing of satisfaction, of wholeness of the self.

Calmness
There are no disturbances or waves in the mind, like a pool of water that is clear and still with not even a ripple to disturb it.

Tranquility
Tranquility is the state of harmony in nature and in ourselves that keeps everything in balance naturally.

Quietness
In this state, there are no sounds of uncontrolled thoughts jumping around like a monkey in the mind; our thoughts become essenceful, returning to the point, with no expansion; it is an economy of thinking that creates quietness.

Stillness
There is no movement of thoughts. I remain absorbed in one thought and, in the stillness of silence, I am at rest, with a feeling of complete detachment from everything.

Peace has the meaning of harmony, balance, order and freedom: when we are free from waste and negativity, then we exist fully serene, fully at peace with everything.

Peace is my original energy and treasure and with the practice of meditation I step inside and experience it.

Thought for Today

The power of silence makes the impossible achievable.

When I am faced with a difficult situation, my mind is flooded with thoughts. I also begin to talk about it a lot, describing the problem to all I meet. Then the problem looks so big that I feel I could do nothing to change it. I need learn the art of silence(mental and verbal). Internal silence brings the right solutions because my mind is calm. And when I don't describe the problem too much to people I will know there is a solution and I will be able to find it too.

The right way of living spreads joy to others.

Projection:

When people around me are not happy with me, I usually believe that I am right and they are all wrong. I then cannot check or realise my own mistake. So I rarely make an attempt to change myself and continue to wait for others to change or understand me.

Solution:

If people around me are not able to get happiness from me or the way I live, I need to look at my own life in a detached way to see where I could change. Even a slightest change brought by me with sincerity will have a great effect on those around me.

Self Esteem

It is our habit to react in a negative, emotional way when someone says or thinks negatively about us. The feeling of being insulted and upset is a choice, which is in our hands, it is not a certainty. It doesn’t matter what anyone says or thinks about you, as long as you think well of yourself, then you will not lose your inner stability, your cool, your inner peace, your power and your ability to respond positively. It’s easy isn’t it? No! Why? The key is not making the opinion of yourself dependent on the opinion of others. If you do so, it is dangerous. Don’t worry about what anyone thinks about you. A hundred people in your life are all thinking different things about you – you can never know exactly what anyone of them is thinking, because you can never be in someone else’s mind. And even if you did know, are they not allowed to have their opinion? You know who you are, you know your own inner qualities and specialties…don’t you?

Thought for Today

To serve with the heart, with love is to guarantee success.

When I have to be of help to others, I sometimes find myself doing it with force. I don't seem to be really interested in doing it but situations or people seem to be forcing me to do it. I then don't enjoy what I do and also don't find the benefit of it either to others or to myself. I need to consciously make an effort to see what people are benefitting when I am helping them. With this conscious effort I am able to help others with love without feeling the heaviness of what I have to do. Thus I find my actions to be much more fruitful.

Consciousness In The Kitchen – Cooking With Love

In today’s information age, we are continuously bombarded with details about the physical aspects of what we eat and the effects that different ingredients may or may not have on us, and naturally this is important. But in this heap of information, we tend to overlook one crucial factor: the consciousness (state of mind) of the person cooking and the effect that this will have upon the food, and thus also on those who eat it. A cook prepares food in a physical place, but also in a spiritual or inner space. And just as the physical surroundings are best kept clean and in order, so should be the state of mind of those in the kitchen. A simple and familiar example of this concept at work can be seen in the way that home cooking, especially that of one’s mother, holds a special place in our hearts. The love and care with which it is prepared sometimes gives us more joy than perhaps food eaten in a restaurant setting where food may be prepared with greater technical skills but where stress, arrogance and greed (in the restaurant environment) may flavour the dish of the day.

When the subtle, spiritual aspect of cooking is taken into consideration, the role of the cook extends from simply creating tasty, nourishing meals with fresh ingredients, to including a spiritual connection with those who will be eating that food. The aim will be to touch and fill the heart as well as the palate and stomach. The love of the cook, and his or her motivation to offer sustenance, will nourish as much as the chemical components of each dish. Food cooked by a person who is angry, depressed or full of arrogance or hatred will have a different effect from food cooked with feelings of Love, peace and the pure desire to serve. In other words, we are what we eat but also the thoughts and attitudes that go into what we are eating. Even in today’s demanding society, when there sometimes seems to be hardly enough time to cook, let alone do so peacefully and caringly, it is therefore definitely beneficial to develop a positive attitude towards cooking. Before undertaking any food preparation, remind yourself that the project at hand can and should be an enjoyable, creative activity, rather than an unpleasant, time-consuming activity. A good practice, then, is to meditate before cooking and then to let preparing the meal itself be a creative, meditative experience which yields a balanced, health-promoting diet for the body as a temple for the soul. Food always tastes better when it has been flavoured with love and happiness.

Relaxation

1. In a quiet room, sit comfortably in a simple posture (position) that will allow you to remain still for as long as possible.

2. Breathe evenly and deeply, so that your abdomen (stomach) rises as you breathe in. Exhale slowly. In this way the body and mind are calmed.

3. Withdraw (disconnect) your attention from your surroundings. Turn your senses inward.

4. In the eye of the mind, picture a sparkling star like living energy situated between your two eyebrows.

5. Focus on this point of consciousness for 5-10 minutes. Experience the energy of peace, love, bliss and joy flowing from this point to the surroundings. This simple exercise will provide you with an experience of relaxation.

Where there is peace there is patience.

Projection:

My usual reactions to the stimuli around me are programmed, so I tend to be impulsive or react quickly to situations, I don't give myself time to think or understand. Because of this lack of patience I lose out on many things and I don't realise that I am losing out too.

Solution:

At all times I need to make a conscious effort to keep my mind peaceful and calm, more so when there is a difficult situation. With this state of mind I am able to deal with situations patiently because peace brings power which in turn brings patience.

Projection:

I am then not able to be happy with what is happening and so find it difficult to do my best in the particular situation.

Solution:

It is as important to be flexible in my thoughts as it is to be particular about my daily schedule. Flexibility allows me to accommodate the unforeseen situations that come up my way and enables me to make the best use of everything. And so I enjoy everything that comes my way.

Love can never be exclusive. The sun does not choose to shine on some flowers in the garden and not others. Love is inclusive and has many faces - caring, listening, sharing from the heart, just accepting someone for what they are right now, are all acts of love, as long as you seek nothing in return. It all starts with acceptance of yourself - you're just fine as you are right now, warts and all. It's not that you will stay that way for ever - but you might, if you don't accept. The secret key to the greatest door called love is acceptance. First your self, then others (especially the ones you currently resist) and eventually ...all. -relax7.com

Anger comes where there is discontentment.

Projection:

When we don't get what we want or when people don't do what we expect them to do we experience discontentment. When there is discontentment, when our desires aren't fulfilled we experience anger. Then trying to do away with anger without knowing the actual reason, doesn't work.

Solution:

When we find ourselves getting angry with someone or some situation, we need to first check what is the true reason for our anger. Once we find the cause of it, which is some expectation of ours, we will be able to work at overcoming it. we will then be able to get rid of our anger too.

The Easy Way to Make Each Day Happy

Making a plan: I start the morning by making an aim for the day - a quiet and purposeful plan that will bring about happiness. I commit myself to being happy today, to observing what is joyful on my life’s path, and thinking about what happiness I can offer to others as I go about my business. As I make this plan, I will also stay open-minded enough to accept whatever changes may happen - even upsets - and I will be prepared to see the good in whatever turns up. If I lower my expectations, I will raise my chances of having a completely contented day.

Checking myself: At intervals throughout today I will check in with myself: sit still and see how I’m doing. I will be firm with myself if I feel I am not fulfilling the opportunities of my life and this day. And, if needed, I will be gentle with myself, congratulating myself for what I have achieved today, and where I can see it, planning for improvements on another day. Such conversations and reflections with the self are the foundation of a happy, contented day.

Closing the day: And so the worthwhile hours of a well-lived day filled with purpose and activity, but interspersed and enriched with peaceful periods of stillness come to an end. With a cleared and tranquil mind and a light heart, may I close my eyes and close this perfect, happy day. I let go with gratitude and in the certain knowledge that as sure as the sun rises, I may have another perfect, contented day tomorrow.

Anger Management And Prevention (cont.)

We had explained steps 1, 2 and 3 yesterday.

4. Detachment

Now detach yourself from the emotion and just observe it. Remember, you are not your emotions. All emotions die under observation. You are the creator and it is your creation. Don’t identify with the emotion.

5. Tune In

The quietest place in a storm is at its centre. And so it is with the storm of emotion. The quietest place is at the centre, which is the heart of your own consciousness. The technique of Rajyoga meditation (as taught by the Brahma Kumaris) teaches you how to go there and connect with the Supreme Soul and discover your inner peace and power.

After following the stepwise method to overcome anger (as explained yesterday and today), at the end of the day, check yourself as to how well you implemented these steps in real life situations to overcome your anger. You may not be able to go through all the steps right away, but for a particular situation, your thoughts while checking yourself, could be: "This afternoon, I did experience a feeling of irritation arising inside me when Mr. Gupta visited me in my office, so I did realize the irritation. I recognized and took responsibility for it, and did not get angry with him. But instead of accepting the presence of the irritation, I began to oppose and thereby suppress it. As a result it worsened by the evening. So tomorrow I will work more on the third step i.e. Acceptance and experience true inner peace."

"Recognize" your routines. Check your entire week. What spaces or moments do you have in the entire week when you do not have a responsibility to work or family? What are the habits or hobbies that you indulge in those moments? What experiments can you do to see how you might change these habits and do something different in those moments?

"Question" the living patterns of your week. How much of your time is spent ordinarily because there is a lack of eagerness to do something different? Are you learning from each day? Does each day hold any moments of special importance, such as keeping a promise to yourself or to another?

"Prioritize" the things that fulfill you most. Do you have any unrealized hopes or promises? These may be simple things, like finding time to visit an old friend, reading a good book on positivity or spirituality, visiting a welfare organization or serving people in some other positive ways, meditation etc. Include them in the daily pattern.

Anger Management And Prevention

To get freedom from anger, you need to stop trying to control other people, events and the world in general and accept them exactly as they are at a particular moment. In the meantime, since most of us have learned and developed the deep habit of becoming angry regularly, given below is a stepwise method that, over a period of time, will help you manage and overcome anger completely.

1. Realization

By increasing your self-realization, you will start to notice the anger in its initial stage, e.g. irritation is the first warning that there is a disturbance in your mind. When you do start to experience the irritation emerging, go to the next step.

2. Recognition

Recognize the fact that you and only you are completely responsible for creating your irritation. Make sure not to become irritated at yourself for becoming irritated!

3. Acceptance

Accept and welcome the irritation’s presence, do not resist it, otherwise it will only become stronger and you are likely to suppress it.

Thought for Today

I am what I think. The mind is constantly occupied in the thought process, and it is virtually impossible to have a vacant (empty) yet alive mind. Without doubt, my entire world has been created by my thoughts. Sometimes the results of these thoughts come into reality immediately and sometimes results take a longer period to come into the practical. However, the fact remains that thoughts, when given constant energy and attention, will come into practical. They are the basis for all my actions.

Re-Discovering Inner Treasures

Whenever the situation or atmosphere becomes polluted with tension, sorrow, or negativity of any type, withdraw immediately into the self and dive deep into the ocean of sanskaras, picking up the pearls of peace and contentment. Come back to that situation feeling refreshed, calm and clear, with the strength to deal with any circumstances. The process of self-introspection (self observation) need only take a few moments.

Meditation

Let the intellect focus on the following thoughts and reading over them slowly, go deeply into the experience of each state being described:

The soul is a point of energy, weightless and light situated at the center of the forehead... Let the intellect see deeper into the self and emerge the memory of the stillness of the original state of the soul, a state full of love, peace and bliss... Let the outside world continue on its way, but for a few moments be detached from it... turn within, and enjoy the inner treasures... of calmness, of peace, a very pure experience... the peaceful soul can more easily gather together its inner powers... Peace itself is a rare power... just sitting and feeling still, experience the refreshment and restoration of strength to the intellect... the cleansing of the mind.

Understanding The Mental Laws (cont.)

Yesterday we had explained the Law of Focus and Attention. Today we explain the same:

The Law of Focus and Attention (cont.)

If our attention is focused on people's defects and weaknesses, we transmit energy to these aspects and strengthen these weaknesses in the other person and in ourselves. If, on the other hand, our attention is directed at the positive aspects of others, we reinforce these qualities and virtues and help this person express them, which is also beneficial to us.

Our personality is made up of a series of values, beliefs and habits. If we wish to transfer our energy to new and positive aspects of ourselves, we must choose the personality traits that we want to emerge from us, focusing our time and energy on them and, in this way, this virtue, value or quality will manifest itself in our life.

Understanding The Mental Laws

The Law of Focus and Attention

Wherever we focus our attention is where our thoughts are directed with most frequency and interest. Thus energy is produced in this direction, whether positive and beneficial energy or negative and harmful energy.

If we have a complicated mind, which thinks too much about certain things unnecessarily, our attention may be led towards the obstacles, problems, upsets and the things we worry about from a critical and negative viewpoint. By paying more attention to difficulties and problems, we feed these types of thoughts with our attention, so that we end up attracting these situations towards us. Finally, the problems and obstacles absorb us due to the amount of energy we have invested in them, turning what was perhaps a molehill (something very small) into a mountain.

The situation does not necessarily change immediately on changing our attitude. With this inner change, however, we will have more energy, clarity and determination to face up to and change the situation. When we focus on seeking solutions to problems and difficulties with a positive and enthusiastic attitude, we attract positive energy towards us, and this helps us transform mountains into molehills.

Human achievement is like a mountain range with cliffs, peaks, slopes and valleys. To aim for excellence in collective achievement is to aspire (aim) to climb to the crowning point. The effort requires each climber to be equipped with essential skills and knowledge and good amounts of determination and will power. However, no climb should ever be undertaken without the most important piece of equipment: the
safety rope of co-operation.

Co-operation ensures calmness, empowerment, easiness and enthusiasm. Co-operation provides the means for each climber to take a step, no matter how small, and for those steps collectively to reach the peak.

There is usually attention on the self not to perform any negative acts. There is also considerable attention not to speak any words that are harmful or negative. But very rarely is there that attention on the thoughts. Because of this a lot of negative thoughts tend to remain in the intellect causing trouble for me.

Solution:

I need to understand the fact that my thoughts form the basis for my words and actions. The more I pay attention to make my thoughts positive, the more it will make a positive impact on my words and actions too. Constant awareness of a positive thought enables me to maintain my own inner positivity.

Positivity And Health

The target organ in a physical body is the organ, which is most prone to disease. It is determined by a mixture of genetic, background and environment factors (internal & external), which in turn are decided by good or bad actions in past births. Bad actions consume the spiritual energy & good actions increase the spiritual energy. Bad actions performed by a particular organ system in a particular birth leads to decrease in nourishing spiritual energy from the soul to that particular organ system, which in turn leads to development of disease in the organ system over a period of time.

Mind acts as a sieve between the soul & physical body. Negative mental energy blocks the sieve of mind thereby blocking the flow of spiritual energy (peace, love etc.,) from the soul to the target organ. It also attracts microbes e.g.: bacteria, viruses, etc., oxidants, toxins towards cells of the target organ in the physical body, which damages the immune system thereby leading to disease over a period of time & disease consciousness. Positive mental energy opens the sieve of mind thereby increasing the flow of spiritual energy (peace, love etc.) from the soul to the target organ. It protects the cells of the target organ in the physical body from microbes e.g. bacteria, viruses, oxidants, toxins etc. It attracts healing proteins, molecules and anti-oxidants and boosts the immune system thereby leading to rapid recovery from disease and health-consciousness.

Thought for Today

To be in the awareness of my own speciality is to be free from negativity.

When I percieve negativity in others, I find myself very easily influenced by it. I then react negatively to them and am not able to maintain my own positivity. All my specialities remain hidden in such a negative atmosphere and I continue to be negative too. Like a rose I need to maintain my originality and uniqueness while being amongst the thorns. Instead of blaming others and their negativity for my own negativity, I need to practice being positive and working with my original qualities. Then I will never complain but will always use my own specialities.

Message for the day 17.07.2010

To be successful I need to have the balance between the head and the heart.

Projection:

In my interactions with others, I sometimes only use my head, i.e., my logic. I am very logical and understand the facts very clearly. But if I keep myself limited only to the facts, I tend to forget to use my heart. I then am not available to the other person and fail to understand him.

Solution:

in order to be successful in my interactions with others I need to have the right balance between my head and my heart. I need to see beyond what the facts say and try to listen and understand the other person too. When I do this I will not hurt people with my attitude but will be able to maintain harmonious relationships.

Stress Management

Most of us have learned to believe some stress is both natural and necessary. One of the most powerful illusions (false beliefs), which keep us locked in a stressful lifestyle, is the idea that our stress is caused by circumstances, events and other people. As long as you think this way you will always be in self-created pain. Some people have been in pain for so long they cannot imagine being pain free, and real relaxation is a dim and distant memory. So they justify their pain as a natural part of living and then feel that others are a cause of this pain. This is dangerous. To listen to the messenger of pain means seeing and acknowledging our stress as our own creation. It is the result of how we respond to the uncontrollables in life i.e. circumstances, events and other people. No one else creates our responses.

If you can see and accept that you create your own stress according to how you are responding, you will then see that there is something you need to unlearn as well as learn. The old response needs to be unlearned, and a new positive response needs to be learned. The regular practice of meditation enables you to do that and become free from stress. If we want to change a habit, then where do we start? In other words, where do we change the system or how do we get out of the cycle? First of all, we can try changing our negative actions: for example, stop a negative habit like smoking. In many cases, although we change our behaviour, but because we have not understood deeply why we wanted to do it, is quite possible that one day we will go back to this old habit.

A vision is what you can see but not yet reach. The most powerful dimension of vision is not the long term dimension but actually the way you choose to see yourself in your work, circumstances, relationships, etc. Important changes start occurring by simply choosing to see things and people differently. That will have a huge influence on the decisions you make and the results. This is the power of vision.

Goals are aimed at achieving the vision. They should be achievable in a short span of time and represent what you can see and reach. Goals should be specific, measurable, actionable, relevant and time bound (SMART).

Clarification of goals then sets the agenda for the strategies (how) that are necessary to achieve those goals, to drive those goals forward. The strategies then need to be broken down into very specific action plans

The one who fulfills promises with determination is the one who overcome all problems.

Projection:

When I see some weakness working within me I usually make a promise to myself with a lot of enthusiasm. But if I face even a little opposition or difficulty in fulfilling this promise, I tend to lose hope and usually give up trying altogether.

Solution:

In order to bring about a change in me and fulfill my promise, I need to use the virtue of determination. Every time I find myself becoming careless in it, I need to remind myself strongly of the importance of the promise that I had made. Then I will be able to win over all the obstacles that come my way in bringing my thoughts and words to actions.

Creating Positive Habits

Some habits do not upset us, but others can cause irritation, frustration and desperation. We want to rid ourselves of them: but how?

When we look at the creation and fulfillment of thoughts, it looks like a closed system: the thoughts lead to actions, the actions create a series of impressions (sanskars), and these impressions are responsible for similar thoughts, which lead us to similar actions, this is a vicious cycle.

We can try changing this system in our subconscious. By analysing what is recorded in our subconscious, through different therapies, the results are not altogether satisfactory. There is always some traumatic event, or painful experience behind a fear which causes us to cling on to a negative habit. And although we can see and recognise our fears and anxieties, if we do not replace them with something better, with a more beneficial and healthier alternative, very often we will feel tempted to cling on to these old systems, even though they do not work and they make us unhappy. To eliminate certain things we have recorded in our subconscious, meditation and silence are the most effect non-violent methods.

Another method is to try and change our beliefs with positive affirmations (thoughts) that strengthen our willpower, and thus introduce a new habit to replace the old one. It is vital not to repeat this affirmation mechanically, but to introduce it into the system of beliefs we hold, and act as if we already were what we express in this affirmation.

Thought for Today

The method to overcome weaknesses is to remind ourselves of our positive qualities.

When we make a mistake we usually realize the need to remove that weakness but our identification with that particular weakness is so much that we are not able to overcome it. Instead of reminding ourselves again and again about our weaknesses we need to remind ourselves of our positive qualities. The more we do that we will slowly be able to emerge these qualities and work with them and slowly we'll be able to overcome our weaknesses.

The one who is free from desire is the one who is able to maintain positivity.

Projection:

When I put forth my ideas to others I expect them to listen to me. My idea changes to desire and when it is not accepted I then tend to become irritated. And along with it also comes jealousy or dislike for the others and I find myself caught up in negativity.

Solution:

I need to make sure that I share my ideas with others but at the same time I need to keep myself free from any selfish motive. When I put forth my idea in a detached way, I too will be open to learning and I will be able to accept any criticism or rejection that comes my way. Thus I will be free from negativity.

Dis-traction is as it suggests losing traction, losing our ground which is precisely what happens when we slip and fall away from being present.

Whether it's because we're focused on something we're trying to do, have anxiety about something that will or won't happen, or just have an overload-induced feeling of scatteredness - it all robs us of the opportunity to fully experience life.

Self Introspection (Self-Observation)

Meditation is the process of getting to know myself completely, both who l am ‘inside' and how I react to what is ‘outside’. Through meditation, I discover a very different ‘me' from perhaps the stressed or troubled person who may seem to be ‘me’. I realise that my true nature, the real me, is actually very positive. I begin to discover an ocean of peace right here on my own doorstep.

The simplest definition of meditation is: the right use of the mind or positive thinking. It is not to prevent thoughts from arising in the mind, but to use them correctly. This is the principle of Rajyoga meditation taught by the Brahma Kumaris.

Meditation should be done for ten minutes at least two times a day. The best time is in the morning after a wash or shower, before you begin your day's activities. Another good time is in the evening, when your day's activities are over.

Lets imagine you know who and what you truly are – an eternal (beyond life and death) soul, a spiritual being.

If this is true of you it is therefore likely to be true of everyone else around you, though they may not be aware, just as once upon a time you were not aware! Now see them also as spiritual beings, as souls, as sources of peace and love, and you will stop building barriers, divisions and separations between you and them. As a result, you will slowly end your creation of fear towards them. You will also stop making your happiness dependent on others meeting your hopes and expectations. This will free your self from all anger and hatred. With fear, anger and all sadness now gone your 'power drains' (outlets from which you tend to lose your power) are closed and your mental energy will gradually increase and stabilize.

Humility helps us maintain good relationships with others.

Projection:

When involved in something that we are doing, we naturally come into contact with a lot of people. We sometimes find that we are not able to get along with certain people. We find it very difficult to maintain a good relationship with them and finally avoid dealing with them all together.

Solution:

The first thing to do is to avoid thinking that we cannot get along with someone because of their personality. When we remove this first block in our mind we will be able to see the good in all. We will no longer think that we are here to teach them but will humbly learn whatever we can from them.

Realizing The Law Of Karma

Many times one meets someone with the feeling of either attraction or repulsion and the thought "Where have I seen this person before?" What happens is that the soul recognizes the other soul, even though their bodies are different from the last time they met (in a previous birth). Someone may be a source of comfort or inspiration, while another for no apparent cause, causes a feeling of resentment, "Why does he treat me like this, I have never done anything to him?"

There are some, who even at a young age achieve extraordinary excellence in some branch of knowledge, art or music, while others in spite of their best efforts achieve nothing. Identical twins may be born to the same parents and have the same environment, food and education, but all their lives, their nature and "fortunes" will be completely different. All these examples can only be explained by the law of cause and effect (law of karma) over a series of births.

The one who has faith is always carefree.

When things go wrong we tend to worry a lot. Many waste questions come up in our mind troubling us throughout the difficult time. We are not able to be free from these kind of waste thoughts and tend to feel heavy. The way to be light at all times is to develop the faith that things will work out fine. Even during the difficult situation we need to maintain the faith that there will be something good that will emerge from the situation. This will enable us to be light even during the most difficult situation.

Relationships

A prison in Miami, USA had the highest levels of conflict, drug abuse and break-out rates amongst all prisons in the US. In came a new governor, who sent all the managers and staff of the prison on a three-day, customer service training course. When they returned he told them, "Now go back in there and treat the prisoners as if they were your customers." Two years later the prison had the lowest levels of conflict, drug abuse and break-out rates in the US. Reason? One word. Respect. Instead of seeing the prisoners as low life trash (waste), they saw them as human beings with their original but suppressed dignity, and therefore worthy of their respect. It transformed (changed) the culture of the institution.

Projection: Sometimes while moving along, we find ourselves becoming unenthusiastic and slack. Everything seems so ordinary and we don't seem to understand how to make each day special for us. We try in little ways to do something different and temporarily find relief.

Solution: The solution lies instead in changing our consciousness. We first have to make sure that we will never forget our aim in whatever we are doing. Then, no act of ours will be ordinary or waste, as we continue to check if everything that we do is according to our aim or not.

Understanding The Mental Laws

The Law of Surrender

According to what or whom your mind thinks consistently of, you will take on the form of the object or the person to which you have surrendered. We can see this in children, when they transfer their minds to actors they see on television, and then begin to behave like them.

What is the highest form to which we can surrender our self? There may be several answers to this question in our mind. Choose the truth from among them. So what is the truth?

Spirituality gives us answers to questions like: Who am I? Who is the Supreme Being? What is my relationship with him? Where do I come from? Where am I going? What is the purpose of my existence? What is the importance of the present time? How can the Supreme Being empower me at the present time?

The answers to these questions show us the way to surrendering our mind to the Supreme Being, which is the highest entity to which we can surrender. When we do that, gradually we get colored by his knowledge, virtues and powers.

Defining Your Meditation Space

To experience your true state of inner peace, it is very important to dedicate a place or space in your home for your regular practice of meditation. Then you need to define the space that you have created. Take a few minutes to make and realize the mental rules for your meditation space - no thoughts of worry, replaying the past, judging, criticizing or doubting. Imagine the space is surrounded by an invisible bubble. The moment you step into that bubble you automatically stop doing all of the above. Whenever you notice yourself going close to doing one of these thinking habits simply withdraw (detach) yourself to free yourself from these mental habits. Never ever blame yourself when you do get carried away by any of these thinking patterns.

These are rules for your meditation space. You need to realize that the negative patterns mentioned above are inner obstacles (barriers) to your meditation practice, which can spoil your meditation and delay the restoration (revival) of your inner peace and inner power.

Meditation is the process in which a meditator emerges the consciousness of being an incorporeal (non-physical) soul, or a point of spiritual energy, located between the two eyebrows with an identity separate from the physical body and connects with the Supreme Soul, who is also incorporeal (non-physical) or a point of spiritual energy but an ocean of the seven qualities - peace, bliss, love, joy, purity, knowledge, and power. Stress Management (cont.)

There are some false beliefs about stress that we have acquired:

"A diet change, a little exercise and a good break from work will banish stress"

Truth: You may think, "What about the fun of the party, the healthiness of playing sport or the comfort of the sofa when there's no work to think about?" To an enlightened soul, real happiness cannot be found at a good party. Parties, like running, like watching TV, like chasing a little ball around the court, are ways of avoiding the inner work of self-control and self-mastery. Keep enjoying your leisure activities, don't stop exercising, don't stop going to parties, just don't expect any of them to give you permanent freedom from your stress or give you a real and lasting feeling of happiness. They may provide relief from some of the pain, a temporary high that feels like happiness, but it's an illusory happiness. Perhaps you sense the truth of this already.

It's probably not what you wanted to hear and you may now be thinking, "I just don't agree." And that's fine. But think about your reason for disagreeing. Is it because your partying and running are under threat or is it because you haven't thought it through deeply? Why do you think that after so many remedies for stress have been invented, written about, manufactured, marketed and consumed, there is more stress out there than ever before? Simple - it's called avoidance. We avoid doing the inner work of taking responsibility for our own thoughts and feelings. Everything in our life, including our destiny, begins in our own head.

There are some false beliefs about stress that we have acquired:

"A diet change, a little exercise and a good break from work will banish stress"

Truth: Diets, exercise, and holidays may relieve some of the symptoms temporarily, but they will not provide a cure. That's not to say a healthy diet and exercise are not important, they are, but they will not free you from stress. Nowadays in every local park you will find thousands of track-suited runners, faces lined in pain, sweat pouring out of breathless bodies, all in the name of balance and relaxation. And relaxation is achieved, because after two miles they are absolutely exhausted. Relaxation is not exhaustion or fatigue. Relaxation is the ability to relax your mind anywhere, anytime, and know that your body will follow.

Going on holiday in the 21st century may still be an adventure; it is still a change of scene, people, food and climate. And change can still (sometimes) be as good as a rest. But now you know that you don't need to go anywhere to rest, relax your mind and replenish your heart. Now you know that wherever you go, you will still be with yourself when you arrive. And what you think, feel and do there is likely to be exactly what you think, feel and do wherever you are now. So your thinking and feeling is what you need to change.

Self-respect depends on knowing who I am, knowing my eternal (ageless), spiritual self. When I have found that sense of spiritual identity, I feel I have a right to be here, to exist. Without the spiritual dimension, it is very difficult to really respect myself deeply. In this case, I base my respect on identifying with the superficial (artificial) aspects of my being: looks, gender, success, my life partner, my intelligence. With such artificial identification, I will never have a stable sense of self-respect, because people's opinions change. Today they love me, tomorrow they reject me. What is the result of depending on their opinions? I will end up fluctuating all the time - feeling positive when they say good things, and feeling down when they say negative things. To stay stable in my self-respect, I need to have a deeper understanding of my spiritual identity (the foundation of this being that I am a soul) and tap into those riches that are within me forever, waiting to blossom, like the flower from the seed.

As I become spiritually aware, those riches and resources start flowing out of me. The more stable I am in my self-respect and spirituality, the more I radiate what I truly am. I feel a deep sense of contentment and I am happy to be me, however I am. I accept myself as I am.

The right kind of support makes people independent.

When I provide help and support to others, sometimes I find that they become dependent on me. Spiritual intelligence is something everyone has but few learn to develop. While our academic education was focused around rational intelligence, some of us may have recently come across and perhaps been trained in emotional intelligence. Rational intelligence manages facts and information, using logic and analysis to make decisions, whereas emotional intelligence is necessary to understand and control ones emotions and feelings, while being sensitive to the feelings of
others.

Spiritual intelligence, on the other hand is necessary:
* to develop a clear and stable sense of identity as an individual in the context of shifting workplace relationships.
* to be able to understand the real meaning of events and circumstances, and be able to make work meaningful.
* to find and utilize the deepest inner resources from which comes the capacity to care and the power to tolerate and adapt at home or at the workplace.

Freedom means accepting the rules of freedom.

Expression:

The one who wants freedom naturally accepts the rules that go untold. He is willing to take responsibility for all his decisions and choices. Such a person will never blame others but try to check his own mistakes.

Experience:

When I take decisions with freedom and take responsibility for them, I am able to learn from anything that goes wrong. I'll feel light and free yet with a base from where I can work. Thus I find myself experiencing constant progress.

Thought Energy

Our thoughts are always there, whatever age we are. Their content may change but our ability to think does not. First of all, I am a thinking, experiencing being or soul. Thoughts are not something physical which l can experience with the physical sense organs. I cannot see, taste or touch a thought. Thoughts are not made up of matter or even brain cells. I am a non-physical or spiritual being (soul), which creates thoughts. My form, a point of energy, situated in the centre of the forehead is the only form that cannot be destroyed. It is something so small that it cannot be divided. My identity is a soul, and all the other identities - teacher, student, man, woman, father, mother, friend, relation and so on – are simply different roles which I, the soul, play.

The beauty of things lie in the ability to appreciate them.

Expression:

Nothing is positive or negative in itself, but the one who has the eye for positive things sees only positively even when there is negativity around. Such a person is like a swan which separates and picks up only pearls from stones.

Experience:

When I am looking only at the positive aspects, I am able to remain happy. If I am able to appreciate everything that comes my way, even if it is visibly negative, I find nothing to be a problem, but everything becomes enjoyable for me.

Thought for Today

The one who takes inspiration from others keeps moving forward.

When I look at the specialties of others, I sometimes tend to get discouraged. At such times my own weakness(es) look very prominent and my specialties remain hidden. Such comparison might not actually lead to jealousy but subtly continues to have its influence on me in a negative way. At all times I must make sure I am constantly moving forward. Looking at others specialties I need to take inspiration from them. I need to see what aspect I can imbibe in myself too. When I do this I will be able to experience constant progress being free from negativity.

To know that the fruit of my effort will eventually come one day, is to understand the importance of making effort. Once there is this understanding, it becomes easy to continue making effort, which is like nourishment that keeps one happy. So effort is never stopped till what has to be achieved is achieved.

Experience:

Knowing that my effort will surely be fruitful makes me enjoy everything I do. It makes me remain happy, keeps me enthusiastic and free from tiredness, even when things are not going right for me. My mental happiness and well being thus keeps me healthy.

Understanding The Difference Between Control And Influence

The moment we become upset with someone in our family or at work it means we are trying to control them. And the moment others sense we are trying to control them, they distance themselves from us, and that reduces our ability to influence them in that situation. This in turn kills our effectiveness at getting things done through others, and leaves us frustrated and stressed, wondering why the world does not behave the way we want it to. This finally turns into the a very important realization - the more we try to control, the less influence we will have, whereas the less we attempt to control others, the more influence we will have.

To give regard to others' ideas is to be a learner.

Expression:

The one who is open to the ideas of others is the one who is able to learn from everything. He is humble and has respect for all. He has the authority over what he does, he is the master and is yet open to learning.

Experience:

Even when my best plan and ideas are rejected or criticised, I am able to remain cool and light because of my regard for others and their ideas. Because of this I am able to constantly learn and experience progress.

Thought for Today

Few words are required when thoughts are positive.

I sometimes find myself using a lot of words to convey what I feel or1 to give explanations to others. Yet I sometimes find that others are not convinced with my words. I am then at a loss about what is to be done. Positive thoughts actually reach out to others and create the right environment. All I need to do is to create an atmosphere of positivity by maintaining my own positive thoughts. Then I will not have to use so many words to prove my point or to convince others.

Understanding What Is Aura

The mind is the thinking energy of the soul (negative or positive). It is the mental energy, which makes the aura (subtle body) of a person. The soul, situated in the brain, radiates its mental energy to all the brain centers e.g.: hypothalamus (thinking centre), limbic system (centre of emotions and attitudes), frontal cortex (memory centre), respiratory centre, speech centre, visual centre etc., in maximum concentration as these centres are located near the soul. In fact the soul radiates the mental energy to each cell of the physical body. Many scientists world over are now of the opinion that mind is not only located in the brain but each cell of the body has a mind that means the mind/mental energy has the same shape as the physical body, which is nothing but the aura.

Now the aura of a person can be photographed by Kirlian photography. If a person most of the time thinks negative, the aura around him has various shades of white light e.g.: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red or can be black if there is no flow of mental energy. If a person thinks positive most of the time then aura around him is made up of silvery white light. Such a person is liked by all and radiates all the innate qualities of the soul e.g.: purity, peace, love, bliss, power around him. Other people coming in contact with him can feel the soothing effect of these qualities. Good meditators normally have clear white auras.

Kirlian photography has been proving useful in diagnosis of disease in a particular part of body and organ system before the disease becomes clinically visible in the form of signs and symptoms.

The one who serves with the balance of the head and the heart is the one who is successful.

Projection:

We usually give directions to people when they go wrong. We also use a lot of logic when we give such directions, but it doesn't always have the desired effect. We then begin to consider the other person to be wrong.

Solution:

What we need to do is to have a balance of both the head and the heart while giving our suggestions to others. That means we need to have a lot of love while giving our suggestions to them. Then whatever we say will have its effect on them.

The method to get help is to take the first step of courage.

When I set out to achieve something, I usually expect help from situations or people, but am not always able to get it. Then I tend to become disheartened and sometimes tend to give up the task altogether. The right way to get help is to first take a step forward even in the most negative situations. With courage and faith when I start in whatever little way I can, I find the help coming to me. Then I will neither stop nor give up with the little setbacks that I am faced with.

Success is achieved through accurate efforts.

Expression:

The one who puts in accurate efforts for the success of every task, naturally tries to do the best. Because of his own contribution, others too help him and contribute whatever they can to achieve what he sets out to do. So there is success in everything.

Experience:

When I do the right thing, I will be able to experience constant self-progress. I will then never have the slightest feeling of failing, but will always experience success as a right, even if the result is not what I have expected. I experience positive feelings because of having put in the right effort.

To have equality in thought, word and action is to be successful.

With regards to what I want to achieve, my thoughts are usually high. I then speak about my high plans to others too. But to bring my plans into action it takes a long time and by then I find that they have lost their intensity. I need to remind myself that if I don't implement my thoughts immediately, I will never do it. I also need to check if the thoughts that I have are practical. I need to then plan and speak about it according to my checking. Then I find that my thoughts and plans are not wasted away, but become practical.

Effect Of Food On The Mind

Food may be placed in one of three categories. Pure (or 'sattwic') food constitutes the staple diet of a yogi (meditator). It includes fruits, grains, seeds, sprouts, most vegetables, dairy products and a moderate amount of spices and herbs. Then there is stimulating (or 'rajsik') food which may be consumed in moderation, and includes coffee, tea, colas, vinegar, radishes, spices and watermelon. Finally there are impure (or 'tamsic') items, such as tobacco, alcohol, nonprescription drugs, all meat, fish, fowl, eggs, stale food and also garlic, onions and chives. These should all be completely avoided. Ordinarily onions and garlics are recommended to non-vegetarians as blood purifiers and to help counteract the buildup of harmful animal fat and cholesterol. However, the healthy vegetarian is not in need of such protection and a spiritually sensitive meditator will be aware that they (onions and garlics) tend to arouse anxiety and irritation - passions which reduce serenity and peace of mind. The purer ones diet, the more the emotions remain in a state of equilibrium, bringing tranquility to the consciousness and greater clarity to the mind and intellect.

The one who sacrifices name and fame is the one who gets recognition.

Projection:

When we make a positive contribution we usually want to get recognition for it. We might not always say it in words but there is always an expectation that others should recognize our contribution.

Solution:

We need to make sure that we enjoy whatever we do. Since the task itself becomes enjoyable for us, we don't anymore expect recognition. The more we become free from expectations we get the love from others and recognition too.

Emotional Intelligence

The ability to pick up others emotions is something we can all do naturally. The fastest way to learn to be sensitive to and identify others emotional states is to learn to read our own. If we cannot inwardly read and identify our own emotions it will be impossible to do this for others.

The great danger of getting too close to others emotions is that we fall into them and create the same emotions ourselves. This is often seen as one of the pillars of friendship in an emotional relationship. But to fall into and create and experience the same emotions as another is not sympathy (mercy), and it doesn't help them climb out of their disturbance. Hence the need to practice 'detached involvement', a process in which we stay sufficiently detached to be able to accurately read and understand the emotions of another while staying sufficiently involved with them so we may offer our help to them.

Effect Of Food On The Mind

In harmony with our great spiritual, religious and wisdom traditions, the Brahma Kumaris places great importance on food. Whilst modern science tends to take a technician's approach and sees the molecules, chemical compounds and nutrients that feed the body; we look at a more spiritual, holistic perspective which places a sacred significance on what we eat, seeing how the food's energy can touch, heal and nourish the soul as well. The body needs sustenance but so does the soul: we must absorb, assimilate and integrate spiritual energy as well as physical energy from our food. Practitioners of the Raja Yoga meditation, which the Brahma Kumaris teaches, are typically lacto-vegetarians (diet is a vegetarian diet which includes dairy products). They believe that non-violence is an essential characteristic of the spiritually awakened individual and that the essence of the human soul is peace, tranquility and love. If the internal workings of the soul are disturbed, by eating the wrong type of food then the individual is not able to enjoy meditative serenity (peacefulness). The meditator sees that whatever food is eaten has an effect on the mind, in a subtle form, in a similar way in which alcohol or intoxicating drugs can dramatically change our mood and power of judgment.

We shall be explaining the different types of foods tomorrow. (Contd.)

When we change our world changes.

Projection:

We usually wait for the world to change, sometimes the world at large and sometimes our own little world. Since it is not in our hands we don't find it changing according to what we want and we give up trying. We rarely think of changing ourselves which is possible.

Solution:

When we change, our thoughts and attitude change too. We are then able to look at the people and our world around us with a different vision. Thus we find that our world changes, not so much in the situation as much as in our own perception.

Your Identity is Your Destiny

There is a direct connection between identity and destiny. It's a simple process to see and understand, even on a daily basis. If you wake up irritated (in a bad mood) it means you are seeing yourself as an irritated being (soul). Perhaps you even think and sometimes say to your self, “I’m irritated today.”

It means your self-identity is negative. So you filter the world through your negative filter and the world actually looks like an irritable place. As a result, you think negative thoughts, generate a negative attitude and give negative energy to others. They in turn will likely return the same negative energy, which you are sending to them and perhaps avoid you altogether. So your destiny of the day becomes …. Not so positive! Now see the same principle and process in life on larger scale. Look around outside you now, and you will see a reflection of how you see your self inside. Your circumstances, your relationships and even the events of the day reflect back to you how you see yourself.

The Definitions Of Meditation (cont.)

We can define meditation as the following 'Rs':

7. Restoring
As we begin to rediscover our inner spiritual treasures by meditating (explained yesterday) and we start using them, our original strengths and qualities are restored. There is a transition (change) in consciousness enabling confidence and self-esteem to become a natural way of being.

Meditation: “I value myself as a being of peace and love and know that I have within me all the qualities which are needed to overcome all the challenges of life.”

8. Recharging
The leap of consciousness that occurs when we connect with our inner spiritual self, is a powerful way of recharging the energies of the human mind. The mind is filled with a deep tranquility (peacefulness) that flows into our thoughts and is then reflected in our words and actions. A world of new vision opens where there
is self-mastery and acceptance of life as it is.

Meditation: “I have the inner strength to let go of judgements, dissatisfaction, impatience and replace negative energies with a more positive outlook.”

When we have the switch of awareness on, our mood will never go off.

Projection:

When something goes wrong we find that our mood goes off immediately. We then lose all enthusiasm and all our thoughts become negative. To change negative thoughts to positive then becomes difficult.

Solution:

Like one single switch brings light into a dark room, our own switch of awareness will bring positivity in our mind. We can take a thought like 'I am the master of my own life' or 'nothing can go wrong today' right in the morning. When we have this awareness on, we will never have our mood off.

To be ready before time is to be able to give the best in situations.

Each situation has something new to teach and there is something to learn from it. For the one who learns from every situation, there is progress. Such a person is able to be ready before time. So when the challenging situation does come up, he is well equipped with whatever is necessary and he is able to give his best. When we are able to understand the fact that all life's situations are just training for us, we are able to learn from everything that happens. We are able to build up and use our inner powers more and more and we find ourselves moving towards perfection with each passing moment.

The Definitions Of Meditation (cont.)

We can define meditation as the following 'Rs':

5. Relearning
As we become free by practicing meditation (explained yesterday), we begin to respect ourselves and relearn what it means to value our self, our life and our existence in this great play of life. Forgotten truths appear and a new education of the self begins.

Meditation: “I am able to understand eternity and spirituality and feelings of my true humanity emerge.”

6. Rediscovering
As we relearn, we rediscover our spiritual values and resources and, realizing they were always there, we resolve to use these silent inner treasures, which are the foundation of a better quality of life.

Meditation: “I am a positive, purposeful being, who has something unique to offer to life.”

The way to get blessings is to be open to learning.

Projection:

We do get both negative and positive situations in our life. When we are faced with negative situations we usually expect blessings from God or someone great by which the negativity in our life will fully finish. But it doesn't usually happen so.

Solution:

The method to receive blessings is to go on learning from the experiences of life. To learn means never to repeat mistakes by learning from whatever has happened. This learning acts as a lift for us, which takes us forward.

It is so important to experience God's mercy and forge a strong relationship with God as our Mother. Knowing that a heart that has been hurt becomes hard, we understand God is the only One who can heal our hearts. Each one should ask him or herself : "What can I do to make my heart softer?" There is such a need of mercy. We have to make our hearts softer and stronger, because a strong heart doesn't experience pain and we know that if we experience sorrow, we cannot serve God.
